  • Modifying Honda Activa -Scooter

    Hi Guys,

This may sound weird and sound interesting to few . But i really im planning to modify my dad's honda activa.

Recently i even posted in what bike section to look for new scooter for my dad but i thought we need to sell the sccoter the get the new instead we can modify the two basic problem we have with it.

    1. height - Planning to cut down the seat to half. Fully or atleast in the the rider place. That i can do with any lining shop

    2. weight - How to reduce the weight of the scooter. I thought of replacing the metal sheets of the scooter with carbon fiber parts. But i may need to ask someone on the feasability to make one similar to the metal body parts.

is it possible ? and kindly advise on what other parts i can remove to reduce the weight.

Many will do weight reduction racing. im doing it for some other purpose

    please share in your thoughts.

Aah!!! so you too are interested in modifying the scoot is it? Let me know your plans, I too am interested, but my current RX is eating all my time. Anyway, my ideas are in technicals to increase the power in terms of increasing torque, may be CC. The outcome of my work will be a stock look, but above average power delivery.

hey, pleae tell us few things to help us decide ......

        1) purpose of these mods. why do you want to reduce weight and height.

        2) plz post a pic of your activa.

        3) how much height reduction and weight reduction are you targetting.

        4) will your father be riding it in night, how are the road conditions there, like good road or filled with potholes, can we reduce the ground clearance to reduce height.

          Good initiative..

          1) ask ur dad if he is ready to see his activa in the state u want it to be.
          2) weight reduction. i agree. carbon fibre ? i kinda feel getting body panels made will be costlier than the on road price of ur bike.

          3) do some engine mods. try increasing the power.. now dont think putting in a k&n will increase power or pick up.

          4) try getting rid of unnecessary body parts like the crash guards. the one's that go all along the bike.

if ur still unhappy, get a powerful bike...

          cheers

Sure. But im planning to have the stock engine and have kind of stock look but less weight and height.

My dad nowadays not feeling comfortable with weight and some prob in balancing. When buying he was managing it but after some small accident he not able to do with comfy.

            2) plz post a pic of your activa. (sure will update )

            3) how much height reduction and weight reduction are you targetting.
Some 10 kgs and height by 5-10 cms

            4) will your father be riding it in night, how are the road conditions there, like good road or filled with potholes, can we reduce the ground clearance to reduce height.
No we cant cos here the speed bumps are huge. so it will hit very badly.

No i dont need activa cos im riding my GSR. I dont want to increase power too. My dad is 52 and you wont believe he will go above 65. im afraid cos he met couple of accidents. so stock is fine.

i can sell activa and get streak or pep but putting another 20 k is waste and activa is just 3 years old with 20k on odo. and its very well maintained.

hey...if the main problem is with balancing then you can add one extra wheel on both side of the activa, any good local mechanic can do that. that way balancing part is taken care of, so no need to reduce either weight or height and the vehicle still remains in stock condition. actually once, some time back i had a similar idea for my dad, and i had test driven one such kinetic honda and it makes it very easy to ride. this is just a sugestion. think over it, if you dont like it, we can then try something else.

I think you can opt for the Honda Dio's body kit. The engine of Dio and Activa (old) are the same. I assume the chasis also will be same. Dio's body is full fiber and hence definitely weight will be reduced and ofcourse cheaper than carbon fiber .

I doubt that Shreeni; The body lengths are different for Activa & Dio
                    Activa - 1761 X 710 X 1147
                    Dio - 1757 X 712 X 1106

Also, reducing the weight of outer body cover will reduce the weight to negligible amount; cutting the seats will show hardly any results.

Already told my mech and his bro (having lining shop) to cut the foam of the seat.

Lets c how it turns out... even changing the panels wont reduce the weight ? then where all the weight of the scoot hiding ?

Chase and engine ? hmm... have to sit with mech to think of any unwanted parts.

Here the pics of our Scoot...

                            Dear Rajesh

Why dont you try Changing Front suspension set of Activa to Telescopic suspension.
front Mudguard is really heavy and dirctlly felt since its attached to handle bar .

If you replace suspension set to telescopic set you will benefit
                            1. Better suspention which is why all latest scooters prefer the same .
                            2. light waight handle which will help your father to control the scooter in efficiant way.

you may need to use fibre mudguard which may be very low in weight .

                            whats say ...???

Lol a reply after almost 4 years Adding my views here for anybody else who comes across similar dilemma's / ideas..

The weight is the metal body.. the activa and dio have ditto same engine. If you want a nippier activa/dio change the roller weights and clutch springs .. that's the safest mod you can do on the scoots.
Read about it here.. Tech Talk with Mo!

Dont even think about touching the suspension.. its easier said than done !
Btw a 125 cc activa will be launched shortly with telescopic front suspension.
