Thanks aryan, leo_nerd,Chicane,suvo,shadowfax, v_310, ketan_r15,Bandhav & hisunil. I am using a Canon 40D and a 100-400 L setup , i was using a 55-250 before but upgraded to 100-400 for the versatility for wildlife and reach for birding, thanks for you response really appreciate it.
@Bandhav: commo'n man, please post your pics, nothing is mediocre when you are capturing nature/people or anything for that matter, each one sees beauty in his/her own way.
@hi sunil: we can defn do that.Last edited by redrage; 04-03-2009, 07:07 PM.With great Power comes great responsibility

@Redrage: For once, I did think that it could very well be the 100-400 L! Man, superb shots. How is the lens? How would you rate it? And what about the push-pull zoom mechanism of the same?
A shortish review of the 100-400 would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking to get either the 70-200L f2.8 (Non IS) or the 100-400L myself; hence the request.
P.S: And please PM me the price!

Not sure about the price of camera though 100-400 lens cost anywhere b/w 106k-120k INR in delhi with bill, in grey market you can procure it for somewhere around 60 K.

Aryan, to start off with i would like to request you to just recall what you would like to shoot , i mean the subjects now and in the future? you have quite a few lens choices and it depends finally totally based on your subject.Originally posted by Aryan View Post@Redrage: How is the lens? A shortish review of the 100-400 would be greatly appreciated.

I basically am a wildlife and a bird lover, i started off with a s3 is, moved onto to 40D and 55-250 couple of years ago cos that was the max i could afford. I lusted after long tele's and medium tele's but the prices were too high with wildlife/birding telephoto lenses say the 500 f4, 300 2.8 costing upwards of 3 lakhs. Only recently i realized that i wanted to go for the 100-400 because its a totally versatile lens for shooting in safari's if you regularly goto forests to shoot tigers, leopards (if lucky) and some birds all with one lens. Now thats why i asked you what u want to shoot?
A)If its only birds and closeups at 400 go for 400 5.6 L which is brilliant lens and way sharper than the 100-400. But again no IS (image stabilization - if shooting low light u might want that) that's the only drawback depending on how steady your hands are. It must be within 50k and quite a steal for the price. Great glass. Focusing is really fast.
B) If you want to shoot wildlife in general then its the 100-400 L because of the zoom and u can get close subjects as well cos the minimum focus distance of 1.8 mts. Drawback is pictures are quite soft at 400 mm if you aren't lucky and get a bad copy, it happened to me when i bought but i got it exchanged. If you see and play around with the push pull mechanism i would say its just fantastic and u don't even need to get used to it! when you are capturing fast action nothing like push pull say you see a tiger running and attacking prey i would say to be fast this type of zoom is awesome. For instance on my trip to Ranganathittu i saw a comman king fisher hovering above water, i was just able to get it in time because of this quick zoom, if it was screw type i might have got the shot awkwardly because of the immediate loss of balance of the equipment when hand held and trying to turn the zoom (i mean this lens is quite heavy at 1400 gms), still i managed this within couple of seconds

The dust problem people say about this is all crap unless you hold it out in a desert while shooting paris-dakar, it shouldn't be a problem, the sealing is decent, but again i have friends who take the lens to service it once an year get it opened and remove minor dust. Just take care well and it shouldn't be a problem.Focus is quite fast and unless you are shooting small subjects its good. The price now in grey is 70k nearly.
c) Coming to 70-200 2.8 (IS/or Non IS) which is a fantastic piece of glass the most versatile if you even get a 2x converter it is going to perform well. And you can use it for almost everything between 70 - 400 ( with 2x) / 280mm (1.4x) converters. This is the glass to buy if you have a 80k budget. You get really sharp images irrespective of the copy. Non IS is really good at 55k grey it makes a good buy and again your choice of subjects is good. it makes a good overall lens.
Do let me know if you want more info.Last edited by redrage; 04-03-2009, 07:43 PM.With great Power comes great responsibility
