                • As promised:

I had my first sports shoot this Sunday. I shot the Women's Basketball game for my University.

                  A few things:
                  - This was the first time I ever used a telephoto lens.
                  - This was the first time I ever used L glass.
                  - This was the first time I ever did a sports shoot.
                  - This was the first time I shot for 'someone'.

I had a LOT of fun. I know these images are a LONG way from decent. I have truckloads more, but these were the ones I picked.

After uploading to photobucket, the image quality seems to have gone down considerably, don't know what's up with that.

                  Some analysis from my side:

                  0. I was using my Rebel XTi + (not mine)70-200 f/2.8L (I am selling my kidney soon) + No grips no nothing.

                  1. I shot 1/320~1/400 at ISO800 f/2.8, instead, I should have shot 1/800 ISO1600.

                  2. I need to anticipate the players moves.

                  3. I was having a weird time framing the shots having selected center point AF Servo.

                  4. Need a battery grip for vertical shooting.

                  5. Not lose orientation and keep the camera parallel to the ground (or the background).

                  6. I should learn to make use of the burst mode, I did not use it at all.

                  7. I've missed focus in quite a few photos, I must make better use of the AF point selection.

I had a 30D to use, but I stuck to my XTi cos I was more familiar with it, and also because I wanted to see what the lens does to my Rebel "Clark Kent" XTi.

Many more, but I'd like to hear from the pros. I had a lot of fun on my first outing.

I got one of these printed in the Clemson University Weekly Newspaper 'The Tiger' which can be obtained here: http://people.clemson.edu/~tiger/iss...rrentissue.pdf. My photo is on page 18 (center).

This link may get replaced by some other issue (but this was the last issue for this semester so I think it should be there for a while.)

I'll be shooting a few more games over the winter break and one this Saturday. I have the choice of using 30D/XTi + Tamron 28-75 f2.8/Canon 70-200 f/2.8L or Nikon D2H + Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR.

I'm goin for the pro body nikon Wanna try my hand with that. Its got fancy AF modes and a sweet 8 fps burst (which frankly I don't want to start off at.)

Note: Sports photog is REALLY tough. I hope to get better with each passing game. I'll be shooting a variety of sports over the next semester. I shoot for my University's newspaper now and I will be required to cover a whole range of topics/events over the next few months.

I only wish I'd got into this earlier.

Better late than never PS. The clarity of the pictures is phenomenal..!! Did you use any software to remove the noise or are these pictures as it is? I ask because ISO800 pictures do have a little bit of grain in them, generally.

And the cheer-leaders are NICEEE! *ahem*
                    :)

                    • The images are soft mainly because I misjudged the freezing shutter speed. I should have stepped up to ISO1600, and done 1/640~1/800th.

The only software for noise removal was DPP and the two RAW noise reductions. It can be de-noisified FAR further than this, although newsprint isn't that nitpicky, so didn't really bother.

Oh I got some NICEE photos of the cheerleaders which I don't think would be appropriate to post

                          • congrats dude powerslave, you are now bitten by the canon L bug. May your disease be long and expensive :P

                            btw, good shots there.

as for the burst modes of the cameras, use them if ya have a few extra handy cards at your disposal, and perhaps an extra battery - you will like having the perfect moment to select from a few shots.

good to see you going for a pro body next time, i guess you'd love the 8fps, and also the next time you canon, do use that 30D, it'd be a BIG step up from the XTi, in areas of burst speed and AF performance.

Yup, I am bitten by the L bug! That's an added bug to the fast lens bug. Damnit why are all my hobbies so expensive?

I am not a big fan of burst mode just yet, nothing beats getting the focus right and then clicking away. Burst mode might come in handy later when locking focus comes naturally, and I shoot a sequence or something, but right now I don't want it to induce the spray-and-pray technique in me.

I do have extra cards and batteries at my disposal and trust me, without bursting too you build up the number of photos fast.

I am pretty familiar with the 40D and have been using it for leisure shooting (along with a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8), both of which belong to my roomie. I know the 30D is a better camera in terms of AF and burst, but I really just want to push mine to the limit to see what it can do.

Now the D2H I may use this Saturday, hehehe, that's gonna be something, in all its 8fps glory, 4MP, superb AF modes etc. Not to mention the comfortable vertical shooting.

Glad you guys liked the pictures, its not a patch on real sports photogs.

                                Long way to go.
