  • Alpinestars TGP-R Air Mesh Jacket Review

So finally got time to write down the review of the Jacket, was super busy the last couple of days.

Before buying this jacket, I had a used LS2 Textile Jacket(forgot the model number), which was a bit oversized for me, but at that time, all I could think was, woah I got a riding jacket with padding and all, how cool is that! Didn't even check how is the fitting is or how well the padding aligns with the shoulder and elbow.

But it did serve me well, did not have any crashes with it, thankfully!

But 2 years later, I had to get a better jacket with proper air flow and snug fit which would save me from bruises during a crash, if it happened.
So, started searching around the forum, went to all the shops selling riding gear, and tried almost all of them, except the cramster, which I always felt a bit too cheap(Quality wise).
So, didn't bother trying it on.
DSG Genesis felt snug and with the extra Shoulder plate, on the outside of the jacket looked cool, but read a review here on xBhp regarding the poor stitching quality, so dropped the idea.

The products from Spartan were pretty good too, but I did not wanted to have anything in complete black design.
Then started to look for brands other that the usual Cramster, Rynox, Spartan and others. I really liked the Designs from ICON, but due to unavailability here in India, had to look for other brands.
Having an Alpinestars Jacket was always a dream for me(Call me narcissist, I don't care ). So started looking for Strictly Alpinestars Jackets.
I don't know who comes up with the nomenclature at Alpinestars, but it's confusing as hell!
You really need to get in the details of each and every model while buying, because each of them are named similar and have very similar features as well.

Now the TGP-R Air does cost a lot more at (Rs.16,000) than anything from Cramster, Rynox, Spartan and others, but the material and quality is quite premium.. Even the velcros feel premium.
The jacket comes with level 1 Knox Armour for Back, Shoulder and Elbow, the normal stuff. But this one also comes with check protector, which is a foam padding. All the armour can be upgraded according to liking and purpose.

Being a mesh jacket, the air flow around abdominal area and arms is phenomenal, during my last weekend's ride, (around 200Kms), I did not sweat even a little bit except for back, but that's because I was wearing a backpack, which made the air flow a bit restricted. Even with the chest padding, the air flow around that area is pretty good.
The only drawback I found was that if you have a half gauntlet gloves, like I have , they don't fit as well. You should have full gauntlet gloves in order for them to fit properly, but other than that, I don't have any complaints with the jacket.

Finally I have a jacket that fits snug and looks cools too.

The design of the jacket is simply superb.

However, I am not sure if Astar jackets come with Knox armours. Can you please check and let me know if its actually Knox at elbow, shoulder and back? If yes, then boy-o-boy, i need to start saving asap..

Does this jacket sport a waterproof liner or noting as such. Also the sizing. As far as I know Alpinestar's typically run one size small, so if you fit a L, then you need to get a XL in Alpinestar. Was this the case with you as well?
Congratulations on your great purchase. Cheerio

Great review! and thanks for the close up photos of the material. Could you please share your own dimensions (Height, Weight and chest) and the size you chose for the jacket? maybe your shirt size vs your jacket size? I wont have a chance to try before i buy so it will help!

          Thanks !

Nice review. The material is way above the others in your list. You will need it more in the coming winter.

The Jacket does come with a waterproof liner which I'm not using right now since it is not raining anymore.

During winter I'll try to wear a thermal inner so that it won't be too tight to wear, with a sweater.

Sorry my bad, it does not come with knox armour, but they are CE certified.

Here are some pics of the shoulder padding and back padding which is basically a perforated piece of foam.

It has a proper back armour or foam padding and armour as option?
Was the rain liner included in the package?
Where did you buy it from? Price approx 15k?
Is there chest padding and option to add chest armour?
I am now seriously considering it

Currently it has a foam padding as shown in the picture..it's quite thick, but the same can be upgraded, if needed.

Yes, the rain liner was included in the package, also I got a Alpinestars Hanger
Where did you buy it from? Price approx 15k?
Bought it from Planet DSG, Pune for Rs.15,999.
Is there chest padding and option to add chest armour?
Same as back padding and can be upgraded.

I would suggest to stay away from that website, at least when it comes to buying riding jackets. They show everything is in stock, but after sending an order, they let you know that they don't sell that product anymore, really horrible.

Better go and try at some local Riding gear Store.

Did you by any chance consider the alpinestar Alux jacket. Same price range almost and available in planet dsg. Would be interested to know what made you choose the other one. Secondly did you also check the 2015 T-GP R?

Congrats on the purchase buddy, even I had gone to the store with the intention to purchase a DSG jacket but ended up buying the Alpinestarts TGP-Air jacket. Just to add a few pointers to the product
                              I) It does come with a rain liner which does the job pretty well even in heavy rains. I have worn the Jacket always for my Bangalore - Mysore and reverse ride home on weekends during the rainy season. Total of 6*2 rides, encountered heavy rains 5 times and my Shirt was not really wet like when I wear a normal raincoat. The jacket also dried within an hours time. Since this is my first riding jacket cannot really compare it to any other jackets , but I found it above satisfactory.
II) Back has a foam padded protector as already mentioned and is upgradable(recommended upgrade since I found it to be fragile and easily bendable nature)
III) The jacket is much lighter than the DSG jackets I had tried on.
IV) It comes with Velcro straps at the waist level and for the arms also and can be easily tightened to necessary levels.
                              v) The rain liner which is black in color makes the white color on the jacket look dirty even when the jacket is well cleaned.
