  • Which helmet - MT Revenge vs. Bell Qualifier vs, HJC CL 17

    Hello xBhpians,

I am planning to buy a helmet for my long rides. My budget is 10k max. Currently i use SOL Illusion for my long rides. It's a decent helmet but 3 years old, ABS shell construction, doesn't come with anti-fog visor and a bit on heavier side. So i did some research and bought a Shiro helmet which was light weight and comes with pin lock visor for the budget. But there is not a single day i repent that purchase as the amount of air and wind noise that gets in makes me feel like i am not wearing a helmet at all! I will become deaf if i continue to wear it for few months..

I jotted down my requirements and short listed these 3 helmets. But i want to take some advice this time before making my purchase as i'm spending a good amount on the helmet.

    1. Should be of a good build quality
    2. Not heavy as i will be mounting my action camera on the helmet
    3. Should have good view and come with anti-fog (or pin-lock) visor
    4. Suitable for upright riding position as i ride Interceptor 650
    5. Should have decent airflow but without wind / whistle noise when riding at 120 km/h (or bear minimum noise)

Feel free to share your experience or any other models/brands you think will suit my requirement.

    Thanks.

I recently brought a MT Revenge. It weights 1.5kg, i think that's standard weight. Comes with a pin lock ready visor and is absolutely silent till 80kmph, post that there's a steady but very very low wind noise, nothing that bothers. It's got a decent view and is very aerodynamic. Never felt the helmet drag even at 120+.
You can try this. At 7.5k it's completely worth the cost.

I too have the MT Revenge. Compared to my older LS2, Revenge makes way too much noise. But then I had purchased it, so have been using it since 2016 December. Every time I wear it, I regret buying it. Too much noise post 80kmph.

I got the MT for its D- ring for those track days. My next helmet would be from HJC. Bell not too many options available for the price range or slightly above it.

I couldn't agree more about wind noise on the Revenge.

I've started using 3M disposable ear protection buds. They do a good job of reducing noise by a decent amount - but i can still hear the honking and other traffic so it's safe within the city.

Hi aks_3682..i don't intend to hijack your thread but i also have a very similar requirement and can take pointers from here. Based on my initial search, you can also add Airoh Valor helmet to the list. It seems to have a very good safety rating, has positive reviews all around and falls in the same price range.
Hopefully experts can shed some light on this lid.

Re: Which helmet - MT Revenge vs. Bell Qualifier vs, HJC CL 17

I am using HJC CL17 for almost two years now. If I am not wrong CL17 should be the cheapest SNELL certified helmet you can buy in India. So you can bet on this helmet to be excellent in terms of safety. But the down side is the weight it weighs somewhere around. 1.7 kg (depending on the shell size)and if you add intercom and an action cam it might touch 2 kg mark. But for me, I have never felt that weight when it’s completely strapped on, even in long rides, considering I ride a KTM Rc with super sport riding position I have done Spiti Valley and Leh from Kerala wearing this helmet. I was always comfortable with the helmet even with a bulky Bluetooth intercom attached. I wear a size S and it’s a perfect fit for me. May be the fit might also play a role in feeling the weight of the helmet. It’s always better you wear and try a helmet before buying it. The size as well as the shape of the helmet should be perfect for your head size.

It comes with a double D ring, pin lock ready visor, adequate ventilation and thick foam padding. The padding is firm and very comfortable. It hasn’t lost its shape even after lot of rough handling, which happens in some other helmets. Visor has very good quality, scratches are few and there is less visual distortion. The wind noise is acceptable but you will have to buy the chin curtain extra which costs 350rs, without which there will be lot of dust entering inside the helmet. Chin curtain slightly reduces the wind noise.

The biggest weak point of this helmet is the visor open- close mechanism. It gets noticeably tighter over time. After 7 months of use my visor opening/closing mechanism failed as it became too tight to open and one of the screws holding the visor bracket snapped. Luckily Performance racing Mumbai who are the authorised distributors of HJC in India, replaced the entire visor mechanism just before I went on for the Spiti-Leh trip and since then i have not faced such issues. My friend also had the same issue with his CL 17 and he too got the mechanism replaced. Make sure you clean the visor brackets periodically using water or visor cleaner and it should be fine. But on a positive note It’s very easy to remove and refit the visor, so cleaning the visor after long rides will be an easy job.

Other than the visor issue, the paint seems to be of low quality on my particular piece. The fluorescent paint on my helmet has faded. But the paint job on my friend’s CL17 is still holding up.

According to me Bell Qualifier is better as I have used it and found very comfortable. Quality wise is also fine. I bought it from High Note Performance.

You can ask them and they will guide you as well which suits you well, they have large variety of helmets.

Their store is in Chattarpur but you can visit their website and also discuss with them about your queries.

Always wear a helmet and Stay safe.

                    Thanks
