  • Helmet under 10k

I wanted to buy a new helmet. Currently, I am using a Vega off-road for commutes and stuff. Now I think it's time for an upgrade.

So I was thinking of buying a new helmet. I have a budget of 10k and I want a race-ish helmet. I looked online and I saw the MT Rapide. It has good reviews.

If anyone else has any other options please let me know. And also if anyone has been using the MT Rapide, please let me know if I should go for it.

MT Rapide is a great helmet. But in the same price range there are great LS2 helmets as well. I use a LS2 FF320 and its my primary helmet. Its very comfortable, has a double visor and has a great ventilation system which keeps it cool during long rides. Try doing a comparison study of both the helmets and check out the features that you are interested in.

If you are spending 10k or above, get something from HJC / Scorpion. MT just isn't worth it.

        Goodluck.

Any particular reason that you say that? I have been reading some great reviews of MT helmets considering the price range they're available it.

Poor quality of the parts like vents. Especially the chin vent.
They are not available to buy later.
Also many report of visor hitting the main shell when Pinlock is attached to the visor, usually in XL size helmets.

            Rest is all okay.

How are SMK helmets compared to MT? Better spares? Better quality?

                Depends.
Fitment quality - MT is better
Paint quality - Gloss is similar, matte on MT is better.

Spares - MT only sells inner lining, visor and ratchet system for visor. SMK sells all things.

Also the lip around the visor is better quality on SMK, so are the vents. (time tested both)

Does SMK have Sharp 5 rated helmets too?

As far as I know,SMK brand is not tested by sharp, yet. There is an option on the sharp website for requesting models to be tested. I guess sharp decides based on the volume of requests received.

Sharp is a regional test and no, SMK isn't tested by sharp yet. There is no fail or pass here, just that it hasn't been tested.

MT and HJC are good mid range helmet brands!

On a slightly unrelated note, I went in to look for an HJC or an MT under the range of 10, but somehow none of the dealers here in Chennai (or even online for that matter) carried an ‘S’ size on the helmet. I ended up spending more than I planned for and got an AGV K1, which I absolutely love. I’ll put up a review soon.

My story is the same. I was hunting for a 'S' size helmet by MT and couldn't find it anywhere in Chennai. I ended up getting 'MS' size AGV K3 SV. Do share your review!

                            Cheers!

It’s quite irritating how most of the helmet shops here try to convince you that you don’t need an S. That an M is what would be right for you.

I only went to 2 stores that apologized and said I should try elsewhere. That didn’t try to convince me to buy a bigger size. One was MotoGear in T-Nagar and the other was MotoNation in OMR. They were also kind enough to try and point me in the right direction.
