A short Introduction
The Pandemic has changed the way we live and I myself have undergone a drastic change in lifestyle and perception of life. Work-from-Home has had its ups and downs. And with the advent of Electric Footprint in the Indian market and our Government's ambition to promote and encourage a Greener atmosphere, I wanted to try my hands on an EV (Electric Vehicle) as a secondary vehicle. My Yamaha FZ 3.0 is and continues to be a true icon and performer, never let me down, however with rising fuel cost and current zero tax on EVs, I felt it was the right time to try my hands on an Electric Vehicle.
My expectations and requirements:
- Should not be expensive. (Since this is a trial for me and my second vehicle)
- Should not be complicated. (So that its easy to fix and for all other smart features, I have my phone)
- Should take me from point A to point B.
- Should have a decent range, at-least 100KM
- Should have portable charging.
- Definitely a designed and Made in India .
I liked the Benling Aura, but their Customer service is the worst on the Planet. At the showroom, they sent a cleaner to explain the vehicle and tell me the cost of the vehicle. I asked him where the sales manager was, and he replied that he was busy in the workshop. So I wondered, if before purchase this was how they looked at a customer, what trap I would have fallen into after I purchased a Benling? I walked out of the showroom with no hesitation and would never walk back again.
Excellent motorcyles like Ather, upcoming Ola Electric was not in my budget range. Bajaj Chetak was not available in Hyderabad and Okinawa, I was not keen to purchase one. Hero Electric was there in my radar, but I did not have a good experience with Hero in general in the past. I did not even consider that brand.
I heard about PURE just a few days before I purchased this EV scooter and didn't even know a showroom existed in my colony which was somewhat hidden inside a lane. I did not have much expectations about this brand since I never heard of it. But since this was an Indian Brand, Hyderabad based startup and a Made in India by Indians, I wanted to give it a shot.
Showroom Experience:
Mind-blowing! I have owned, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Royal Enfield in the past, but nobody really rose to the occasion to serve a customer with passion. I right away understood, that this Hyderabad based startup stemmed from IIT Hyderabad meant business. These people are here to stay in the market and they really care about their customer. I was explained in detail about various models and especially the ePluto 7G which I was interested in. I test rode the scooter and with an hour, I had booked the scooter. I was told FAME subsidy does not apply to this vehicle as they don't source the parts from suppliers that the Government wants you to acquire from. Instead, PURE wants more control over their supply chain and hence they do not fall under FAME subsidy.
That did not deter me from wanting to purchase this scooter because it ticked all the boxes of my requirements and it was on-road 90450/- INR with accessories and registration. I paid no Tax for this vehicle. And with this level of Customer service, I knew I could fall back to these guys, if ever I had a problem.
Here are the technicals which a common man would want to know.
- Full Charge from Zero to Full takes 4hours 30 minutes (Give or take 15 minutes depending on surrounding temperature)
- At full Charge the scooter goes 120Kms in Drive mode (1), 110Kms in Eco mode (2), and 90Kms in Sport mode (3)
- The real life range for riding in city is a little higher as the scooter has regenerative braking where each time you coast the scooter or brake, the Kinetic energy in converted to Electric energy and that goes right back into your battery for charging.
- The real life range for highway riding will be slightly lower as regenerative braking is minimal since you constantly drain the battery as you ride long distance without slowing down.
- Speed limit:- Drive mode (35km/h), Eco mode (45km/h), and Sport mode (65km/h)
- The overall weight of this scooter is about 75 Kilos with battery and can carry a factory defined load of 180Kilos.
- The vehicle comes with a charger that does not allow your battery to be over-charged, hence please do not use non-factory chargers.
- Headlights a bright LEDs and lights up your dark alleyways with ease. The best part is, you can turn off the DRL and headlights if you do not want to use it.
- Comes with Anti-theft and immobilizer kind of feature where the read wheel gets locked if someone tries to move the scooter.
- The Battery meter is a "Guess-O-meter" hence it kind of gives you an overall picture of the battery level, but do not rely on it for accuracy. I will explain that further below.
- Apt for one person, not suitable for pillion going long distance.
- Yes! comes with 4 Keys and 2 remote locks. Very generous!
- You can choose to ride with Key or Keyless.
- Bright LED display at night, not so Bright in daylight.
- PURE stands for Power Using Renewable Energy.
- Ride Quality:- On the stiffer side. Hence you feel the pot holes. I am told this can be adjusted during first service, hence I will wait until I review more on Ride quality.
A Rear view of the scooter, notice all the spare keys. The rear grab-rail is solid steel and provides a strong grip.
Can easily mistake this scooter for a Vespa if you do not notice the badge. This is a Matt Grey to me, but the company classifies this as Matt Black.
Same Tyre specs, front and Back. Ceat Tubeless 'Made in India' 90/100-10 53J (10 inch tyre with a maximum speed rating of 100km/h and load capacity of 206Kilos)
Front Disk brakes have a strong bite, hence be careful to not use it carelessly. There is no ABS.
Rear tyres are 42J which means load capacity of 150Kilos which gets me scratching my head. The motor unit is what makes most or all of the Rim and has Drum brakes.
No Boot space! The Battery charger fits in perfectly in-case you are traveling long distance. The Battery is 15 Kilos and is strapped down with an elastic band. A Handle is provided if you need to pull the battery out for charging at home. Notice the MCB Trip switch. The switch disconnects power to the entire scooter.
The charger that can fit in the boot space. I keep it at home since the unit is heavy.
The Center stand. Notice the Rubber bush. It came off once and the service center fixed a new one. Without it, the center stand makes noise on bumpy roads.
A side hook as called by the service center, to me its a handle used when ladies sit sideways. Its an additional accessory. Notice the PURE badge. The seats are on the softer side.
Side footrest for the Ladies. Quality is great and solid.
Retracted Ladies footrest and a Key slot to Pop the seat open.
An External charging port if you want to charge the scooter without removing the battery.
The ignition Key slot and the closed Glove box.
A glove box which hand story tiny essentials. Not that practical.
The PURE ignition key and remote lock. Only the remote lock activates anti-theft features. For those who want to use the scooter the old-fashioned way, the Key works very well.
All the display lights lit as soon as you turn the ignition on. The display is minimal and gets the job done.
In Park Mode. The P mode disables power to the motor. Disable P mode by pressing the P button or depressing the rear break lever once. The Battery level can be guessed by allotting 20 Kms for each dot. Hence 20 X 6 = 120 Kms. However the company claims the last dot will suffice only for 15Kms. Hence be alert and don't ride till you drain the battery till the last dot.
Left Handlebar switches:- High-Low Beam, Horn and Left-Right Indicators, Rear Brake.
Right Handle bar controls:- OFF-->DRL--> Headlights; Throttle, Front Brake, Horn switch again, Speed mode (red switch) and Parking switch.
LED DRL and Halogen Turn indicators
Old-school looks Headlight casing with bright LED Headlamps. I am yet to discover the power rating.
I hope I have done justice to our readers who wish to understand more on EV scooters, since there is a general fear that EV vehicles are or may not be reliable. But I believe this is a revolution and in time, we will see more outstanding products from different manufactures with longer range and lighter batteries. The single most cost of the EV is the battery. The cost of this 2.5kw battery alone is 45000/- Rupees plus 18% GST. If manufactures can cut this cost, EV's will in future rule the roads.
Thank you for reading my short review and throw your questions at me and I will be happy to respond to all of you. Ride Safe !
