  • [Ownership Thread]: Hero Xtreme 2014

Warning: This story may go longer than you expect

It was on december 2013that I thought I will have my first geared bike. Till that day I was not a fan of Bikes, but used my Wagon R for extensive touring. My Activa(2007) have began to torn off after 98K plus KMs of hard driving. Activa have shown the signs of age and now the engine and the rear wheel is always "hot" even after a short ride.
After a couple of blown drive belt's and ruthless starting mannerisms, my wife started to compel me to take a bike. on december 2013, I went to the Royal enfield showroom in Alappuzha(Rider motors) and booked my bike(electra silver) after paying 5K. Delivery date was given after a couple of months and after long wait when I went there, the bike was not ready. This coupled with the expression of sales girls(What are they doing in that enfield showroom?) compelled me to ask for a refund(they even intimidated me saying that they will cut 250 off as handling charge). later it was the chance of St. Mary's motors in Eranakulam. There I booked a thundebird 350. same thing repeated there as well. at last i went to showroom and they said to pay the cash and take the delivery after a week(My neighbour waited for a month after paying this full amount for his std 350). That evening I heard the gods call and the next day i paid the entire 1.5 lakhs kept aside for buying thunderbird to SBI to pay off my car loan.

The decision to take the bike was kept pending, and in websites and XBHP, i was following the new launches and saw that Karizma was in for a complete revamp with EBR. On Monday, June 09 2014, I walked into the hero showroom (East Venice Motors) in Alappuzha for the test ride of ZMR 2014 version. I was in love with the machine when i saw ZMR and post ignition it grow in as my obsession. Was about to confirm my order(OR around: 1.15L in Alappuzha) that I suddenly thought "hei I am a family man". i asked the showroom guy to sit in front and tried my hand as a pillion. With 5'8" i found it difficult to climb(it was a indeed a steep climb) and what will be my wife with 5'1" will do(That too with the naughty kid - 9 months old)?

Then I saw Xtreme sitting in a corner and I asked the guy that I need that machine, and I booked Xtreme without even doing a test drive.

I know the features, I know that it is the same trusted honda sourced engine and what else should I check?

after doing a quick PDI I asked the showroom guys that I need the delivery by evening. They agreed and I went home happily.

At 5.00 PM I was back again in East Venice motors with my riding gears(It's rainy season in Kerala) and after waiting for more that 30 minutes, someone came and informed me that my bike is not registered!(they know about that by 1.00 PM and no one even call me?). I was in full fury, but resisted temptations of foul language and after much debate they agreed to deliver the bike next day to my Wifes home. and went home with a sinking heart. Later on I found that It was the first xtreme 2014 in Alappuzha and RTO asked for proof of approval for that (must be from ARAI - not sure).

BTW, I paid Rs. 81300 that day as Bikes OR Price.

Next Evening I was so immersed in the work that i wasn't aware that it was 5.00 PM. I got a call from showroom guy to confirm house and they keys were delivered to my mother in law. It was about 9.00 Pm when I reached my home and it was drizzling. I was curious to see my black Xtreme and went out after 9.30 PM when the fury of the rain was less. Opening the gates I saw the welcoming blue blinkers on xtreme(Of the immobilizer) and after a couple of courtesy talks with my in-laws, took Xtreme out in to the roads. Filled to the brim from the nearby petrol bunk, I went back to my home riding on xtreme.

Here are some of the photo's (Sorry for the clumsy photos, for they were shot in my mobile at night with and without flash)

Congratulation man for your xtreme, is the bike comfortable in riding i have heard that xtreme is for taller people, how tall are you, and pls remove that tank cover or the paint will be destroyed, i totally agree on the point that what a girl is doing in RE showroom, they should not be there, or i would say they should not be in any motorcyle showroom.

Thank you, and yes, I removed the same on the first week itself. In kerala, not only that it damage the paint, but also make the tank rust for the water will be suspended under it.

Thank you dear. I'm 5'8" and its 'Xtreme'ly comfortable for me.. Pillion seat is on a higher side. and yeah, the girl in RE showroom was showing an attitude like "take it if you want, this is the service that we can offer you"

Thank you dear, Took the bag off. Rain is un-avoidable in here. Done my first service and have put on an anti-rust coat on it (costs Rs. 200 and 1 year Warranty). Now the bike shines.

            ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

            And the story continues..

It was already night when I reached back home on the day of delivery and the rain was heavy, I couldn't do any inspection of the bike at that time. Next morning I rode to Eranakulam (67 Kms from my home) on the bike. I was having issues with changing gears, especially while fiddling with the lower ones. (association with Activa, was taking its toll). Reaching office parking area, my colleagues came in to see the bike and then I opened the seat and found there is no first aid kit or tool box. I was not able to set the time, see the Odometer, and the display always show that its in Trip B. That Saturday I went to the service center to show the bike, for I was hearing some strange noise(especially on high gears) and that too when i release my throttle. They claimed to rectify the same, but it was still there. I took the tank bag off as water was staying under the same and chances of rusting was there. They ordered a new speedo/odo cluster for me as they were not able to rectify the issues with cluster.

In that visit I asked them about Medi and tool kits and they gave the same without any issues. Before leaving service bay i visited the sales team and demanded full description on how the amount of Rs. 81300 was reached and after doing so many calculations, they gave back Rs. 1840 and said that it was a clerical mistake. You wont believe that they charge 1100 + for registration (worth110 +7% if we do that ourselves) and handling charges. Even the chart they have infront of them regarding the insurance and registration charges were wrong!(Lesson Learned: Always ask for bifurcated bill on your purchases). I queried why I was not informed about the allotted number and the answer was funny, it was because the lady who used to call customers about the numbers was on leave!(Our Govt. offices are better than this.)

My odo(read it as trip meter) was at 400 when I visited the service center for the first time), they some how reset that to 0 and 200 KM's after, I went in for my first service.

Service cost was there for oil Rs.280, consumables(no description there) Rs. 60 and Rs. 200 for an anti-rust coating(one year warranty) = Rs.540
The most interesting thing post service is that the service due warning lamp is now "on" all the time. (I forgot to check that as i was concentrated on noice and other factors and it was raining(again) when I went to take the bike back. and I havent yet got the speedo meter cluster yet!

Xtreme is now ridden for around 1100 plus Kms and I would like to share my real experiences on the bike in the posts that is to be followed.

Is it from the engine? I don't think so.. Its coming from some where else.. after the first service they commented that its from the chain as it was loose. on PV i couldnt find much slackness. Everything was smooth till this day, and again I think I heard it this day a couple of times.

                Continuing with riding experience.>

I will concentrate more on my experience rather than giving the tech specs.

                What I hate

                1. The malfunctioned ODO. They haven't yet called to inform the replacement(I have to call them this day).
                2. Lousy Service and Post sales support
                3. 5 Gears. It have the power and ability to fit a 6th gear. 5th gear doesn't feel like overdrive.(Love GS150 for that)
                4. rainy rides, 4.a. My back was covered with mud from my tyres when I rode for 70 + Kmph in rain. 4.b. The rubber lacked a little grip on road in one stretch(The road was filled with foamy water, and it was a steep climb(don't know what that foam was) and overcame the situation by riding behind a trailers tyre trail. 4.c The Pass light became sticky when Riden in Rain. 4.d. My horns stopped working after a few kilometers in rain(its exposed to all elements of nature(need to cover that now).
                5. The poor quality break lever - on close observation I could make out the welding mark on them.
                6. The pillion height - My better half have an issue on climbing them.
                7. The high brow(that is what they call it) position light! It looks like 3 usual lights(looks damn cheap when I had a closeup view of them(could have been good if they were LED.
                8. The Headlights and horn - I hate them, the light and horn in activa was more powerful than this one. The light gets dim on releasing throttle.(My heart sinks at this coz, I was looking for ZMR because of the projector HID)
                9. Heavy(with around 146 KG Dry weight, it is a little heavy - My vehicles will always have ample fuel in them so that adds the weight up.)

                What I love

                1. Engine - Butter smooth, peppy and highly responsive with 14.4 BHP(every know that). Even the torque is adequate for city ride and occasional burst
                2. LED Tail light - Love the looks(Good visibility as well)
                3. Mirrors(though Small, these mirrors are in diamond shape and offers good view of rear.
                4. Paint quality(in black colour this bike shines)
                5. Bike won't start in gear plus side stand combo(switches off when side stand is on). A boon!
                6. The shocks- love the way the bike handles the potholes
                7. Wheels - The 18 inchers are doing a good job in this bike in most of the cases (please refer the rainy ride in the hate section as well)
                8. Breaks - This is one hell of a thing I love. The double disks are doing a pretty job in here.
                9. Quality of switches - Good, except the pass lights(in rain)
                10. Exhaust notes, though feable in lower RPMs, love the way it increases when we give the throttle

Sales service is one department in which every indian bike manufacturer lacks some more some less,
Sixth gear would have been good for long distance riding but then the bike will lack in midrange torque and punch plus bike would have felt sluggish in lower gears.
At this price fit and finish should be upto the mark it's pity that welding marks are not properly grinded, actually companies tries to save labour and hence don't pay attention to such small details, which are very important.
As the bike have got AC/DC electricals headlight is bound to get dim as the engine revs gets down.
Heavier 2wheeler helps to tackle crosswinds better, or feels stable on highways but is very hard for city riding, as the extra weight will always be a problem as you have to zigzag in the city riding a lot.

When ever I do the riding, i do that for 50 + odd KM's Midrange torque is good in this one..

Except for the lever and an area under the headlight assembly, everywhere else the fit and finish is good.

As the bike have got AC/DC electricals headlight is bound to get dim as the engine revs gets down.
That is a letdown, Any suggestions to overcome this? What are the implecations of using relays? And thinking of changing the headlight to xenon with projector with RTO approval. Have to check the proceedings.

Its Quite ok in City as I don't do much zigzags, and yes, stability as you said is good. Only problem is the instances when I need to get the bike reversed out from a tight parking place like that in my office.

                      Re: Hero Xtreme 2014

150 cc bikes are designed more for city riding, for city riding you need well spread out torque which saves the rider from hassle of changing gear frequently, and as you are riding inside economy zone you will feel comfortable and the bike will return good mileage.

I can't comment on electricals but what i know is to equip the bike with projector headlamps you have to convert the bike electricals to full DC, plus you have to up the charging system of the bike otherwise the battery will drain out very very fast and i don't think it's advisable to play with a vehicles electricals until one is having full knowledge in this department, what you can do is you can choose a brighter headlamp like osram and philips.

straightline stability of any heavy 2wheeler is very good the bike will not get unsettle by road undulations also, it's just that one wants to ride the bike spiritdly then the problem occurs, like taking sharp corners, once you lean in a curve it's difficult to get a heavier 2wheeler out of the corner, or if you riding the bike slowly or in bumper to bumper traffic at that time you feel that bike hasn't got good handling and has got too much of weight ,making a bike rider friendly is no simple task, you need good chassis, one example in this department is Yamaha's fz which has got brilliant chassis and the bike just plays in your hand.

But still you have purchased a good product and every bike has his plus and minus, just take good care of the bike, always get your bike serviced in time, use good quality oil, and this honda engine will serve you uninterruptdly.

I am in search of bikes. I am confused with the Suzuki GS and Xtreme 2014. There are very minimal ownership reports on the net. Since you have ridden the new Xtreme, what you will suggest?
The GS or the Xtreme ? I travel close to 60-70 kms daily 5 days a week..........
                          Thanks in advance.

Thank you dear.. I will make sure that I will take care of her. Now with more KM's I'm indeed becoming confident in handling her.. She have started zipping through the traffic. It is full of rage now.

Deemash, Its almost the same distance that I too cover (but for me, it's one side - so total of about 130-140KMs a day). I prefer Xtreme, mainly because of the riding position(I'm 5'8") if you are less than that height better not to take Xtreme.
Please do a test ride. The main advantage of GS150 is that extra gear that it uses (do you have highway stretch in your ride? That helps there). When I do the TR of Suzuki, I found that less thrilling, but well settled, A less under-powered than Hero.
Please note that in our places there are lesser number of Suzuki's and that hurt in spares department. (Even 2014 Xtreme may face that issue).

                            The story continues:

BTW: I went to Hero Showroom Yesterday. Before that I made a couple of calls to parts department there to know about the part they have ordered. They communicated that they will check and get back to me. After a long wait, I went there directly. Asked the spares about my order. They asked me to wait and after one hour they came with a box, and a smile on their face. They opened the box and my heart sank. That was the old Speedo meter cluster that they have ordered. I said I need a resolution on this and went to the sales area asking for the bills of the extra fittings. I got the bill and I was amazed that they have charged a seat cover, which was not supplied to me. I was in full rage at that time, saying that I'll be dealing that in my way. The sales manager took me to the owner(I dont know why she have done like that. Inside the owners cabin I burst out giving one by one info on what I have gone through. In 10 mins time manager of spares, sales and service was in that cabin. It was the turn of owner this time and he poured everything on those fellows(even I felt bad about that). in another 10 minutes time I was out of the showroom with a working odometer...

They could have given me a resolution earlier itself. But now I'm satisfied with the whole stuffs.. I'll be taking some snaps in the next available slot of mine.

Hi Vishnu..I am from palakkad...We have only one showroom here. Actually, my native is cherthala(Alleppey) and I went to coir city motors there for a test ride. The sales person said I can test ride in their compound. ..So I did not get a good feel of the bike. The sales guys does not know much about the new features.
I have a pillion too who travels with me. So I need both rider as well as pillion comfort. Highway ride I only have 35 kms and 15 kms city. But the highways are filled with trucks so you cannot go above 70 kmph.
This saturday (tomorrow) I have planned for a test ride of both GS and Xtreme with the pillion. Generally, how far we can do a test ride? some dealers say within their compound..etc..some rules..None of my friends having both the bikes...worst case

                              Few clarifications on Xtreme 2014:
                              1. I asked about seat covers and all for the new xtreme. The sales guys said parts are not available as it is a new bike and it will take some time to stabilize. No big deal..but are the parts really available?
                              2. What is the FE that you are getting mix of Highway and City AND Highways?
                              3. What I observed is that the back mudguard is too thin. I believe dirt will be spilled on the back of the pillion rider.. Correct?
                              4. What are the color choices of this bike? (Ad showing blue..etc..But the coir city, cherthala guys told me only red and black colors have started coming.)
                              5. Have you felt any vibrations? If yes, after how much speed? From the reviews of GS I understand that the GS comes with engine balancer and all. But I am not sure how far it works. I dont like vibrations to come in.
                              6. Regarding the engine? Is it the same engine which is being served for xtreme and hunk since few years ? I mean is it the same honda engine or the engine is newly developed by Hero ?
