After giving away Streak & Activa, it has become very difficult without a scooter for the short drives to purchase groceries.
Temporary change in office location to center of Chennai city has made things worse. I forgot how to ride in city during peak hour traffic as I always preferred outer ring roads / empty city roads during afternoon/nights for the last 5 years.
My Unicorn started returning 40KMPL (from 52+) in the peak traffic conditions. I am also unable to park/reverse GS in the congested parkings.
Requirement:
INDIAN make.
Well I started using & recommending products belonging to India since a few years. Be it tooth paste or a car.
Honda, Yamaha & Suzuki out of the list. I love the Aviator so much that I wished some Indian company manufactured it.
Booking:
Based on my short term experience with TVS Jupiter (<1000 KM), Jupiter was finalized. My reviews on the bike is already available in the Jupiter ownership experience forum.
The bike has crossed 11K mark within a span of 8 months and is performing flawlessly.
Went to TVS showroom from where I purchased the Streak & Jupiter to get a quote for the same. Seems price have decreased compared to the last time I booked Jupiter.
I wanted to get the same registration number as my other bikes. So I had to wait for at least a month. I postponed the booking amount. In the mean time, I inquired about the rate of Jupiter from a different showroom. There was a difference of 1000 Rs. Felt bad that the friendly neighborhood showroom was charging me much after being a repeat customer.
In the meantime, I checked Hero Maestro, Hero Duet, TVS Wego & Mahindra Gusto on a boring weekend.
Some -ve according to me compared to Jupiter:
Maestro: Headlight & Speedo design. 10 inch rear wheel. Reducing Hero showrooms around the locality.
Duet: 10 inch wheels. Reducing Hero showrooms around the locality.
Wego: Pricier than Jupiter with less storage area and limited leg area.
Mahindra Gusto DX: Steel wheels instead of alloys. NO pass light. Plastic body when compared to Jupiters metal. Limited service centers. Internal fuel filling.
The showroom guy at Mahindra insisted me for a test drive.
After the test ride:
Me: Why should I not book this bike ?
Me: Because it is not having the features as compared to Jupiter.
Me: Apart from pass light, what difference does it make ?
Me: Practically nothing.
Me: It weight heavy at 120KG which will suit your highway riding after the office location change:
Me: Yes you are correct but...
Me: It also has a 6 litre fuel tank and the best ground clearance in the scooter segment
Me: Yes.!
Me: If you are not OK with Mahindra, why did you suggest Centuro to your junior at office 2 years back ?
Me: But that is a bike. Why shouldn't we ask him now about how the bike is performing.
Made a call to my Junior. Asked if everything is OK with the bike and service. Got a big positive reply.
So finally asked for a quote with thousands questions running in my mind. The price was Rs 5500 cheaper to Jupiter when I get the bike ON-Road.
Me: I am planning to book Mahindra Gusto
Friend (Suzuki Fan boy): Have you gone Mad ?. Get New Suzuki Access.
Uncle: You will never get spares after few years.
Mechanic: No resale value sir but I have ridden the bike. It is good.
5500 is a big money. So this was my biggest positive on Gusto which made me to book it.
Make payment the next day and asked few questions at the showroom.
Will it be a 2016 manufactured bike ?
Will it give mileage at-least 50 KMPL?
Will that be used for test drives ?
Post Booking:
Me: I have booked Mahindra Gusto.
Wife: You did not get me a piece of jewelry since our Marriage. !
Dad: Are you going to sell your other vehicles
Spare parts shop owner: Sir, cancel the booking. Get a Jupiter.
Waiting Period:
Number selection has created a big waiting period for a bike which usually can be brought home the next day after payment.
In future I will tell my Gusto had 1+ month waiting period.
There are 200-250 vehicles registered each day in our regional RTO. So for receiving the number of my choice, I will have to wait another 3 more weeks.
2000 RTO Fees + 500 for the dealer to do it by himself. Saves a day's leave for me.
Thats All for now. Will post after getting the bike.

Reminds everyone about the fight for occupying the co-driver seat in the cars.
