  • [Ownership Thread]: Yamaha MT 15

I previously used to own a pulsar 200NS but since the release of this motorcycle I've been restless. I'm a big time Yamaha fanboy and R15 v3 has impressed me like a boss. The only thing which bothered me was the riding posture. As I'm into long rides, I wasn't into the aggressive seating position. So right after the release of MT-15 and a huge research I finally decided to buy myself a MT-15 and on May 30th it happened.

So I've started this thread so that people could ask me regarding the true ownership review of this bike and also any queries. I will try to answer to the best of my knowledge.

    Thank you fellow bikers.

First of all, Congrats on your new bike.
How would you compare MT15 with 200NS with regards to touring capabilities, power, top end performance, refinement, build quality, stability etc..
I'm sure top end performance and power will be less in MT15 than 200NS.

I would ask you to post about mileage figures and better photos.
Other things that I want to know are as follows:
1: Does it have a distance to empty reading?
2: Does it have an average fuel consumption reading?
3: Does it have an average mileage reading/indicator?
4: At what RPM do you ride in city if you were to ride at 60Kmph in 6th Gear?
5: Does the bike produce heat in heavy stop go traffic with current hot weather?
6: How often does the fan kick in?
7: How is the front and back suspension like - soft (comfy) or Stiff (kind of comfy for short distance) or Hard (meant for race track not comfortable at all)
8: How is the seat cushion like? For long rides would you prefer an air cushion like Ride on Air?

Sorry for so many queries but you asked for it

I don't know whether i can do a comparison as i have only ridden 180kms and its just been a week. But i have done a short ride of 60kms in total back n forth and i would say touring capabilities are top notch with the level of refinement you get. I used to hate the vibes and buzz NS used to produce in lower rpms but that is no existent on MT15.. When it comes to power and top end we all know who is the winner here - 200ns it is! [emoji7] I used to have a 2013 model ns therefore i would give a 6/10 for refinement and for MT 15 it is 9/10, such a smooth and revv loving engine it has got. Build quality again goes to Yamaha MT15 while in comparison with 200ns. In case of stability i guess MT15 is lighter in weight compared to 200ns but this is debatable coz till now i have not found any stability issues with MT15 and it is stable as 200ns if you ask me but then I've to do a long tour and I'll update you later on that..

              1. I have no idea what that means, probably my lack of knowledge. Kindly enlighten me about it.

              2. Yes it does.

              3. Yes it does.

              4. 4.6 to 5 i guess..

              5. It has started raining in Kerala and it is not quite hot here anymore. I have done only a 60km back n forth ride since i brought the bike and it has been a week only. And the total km I have ran is 180. Till now it has no heating issues.

              6. Hasn't happened yet.

              7. It is neither hard nor soft.. it is kind of a moderate stiff i would say..

              8. Seat cushion is just ok - ok. When compared to my previous bike 200ns, its not that comfy.. i would recommend an external gel seat padding for long rides..

And pictures, I'll attach every pic I have of my bike till date..Click image for larger version

Distance to empty is a reading that will give you a range in Kilometers on the current fuel level that remains in your bike tank.

Sorry for so many queries but you asked for it

I have got an MT15 (1st in the State 'booked it long back') and have clocked around 4500 kms on it till date. Moved from an AS200 to the MT15 (AS200 was stolen )

So, I'll try to answer all your questions here and will post some good photos in the upcoming threads.

                    1. There is no Distance to Empty reading. However, you get an Trip F which activates the moment you hit the reserve fuel and keeps on showing the no. of kilometers you have clocked after hitting the reserve. During my usage, I get a feel that the reserve fuel capacity is somewhere around 2 litres and you can run +/- 70 kms in the Trip F. (Taking risk beyond 60 kms in Trip F is not advisable)

                    2. Yes, it has an average fuel consumption reading and you get it in 2 modes: i) L/100km ii) km/L

                    3. The answer to Q.2 covers it.

                    4. 5 - 5.5 rpm goes on for smooth riding. (Absolutely no stress on the engine during low rpms in 6th gear can even manage in 3.5 ish rpms)

                    5. Not that much as compared to other bikes like the Duke, Pulsar, ............ from my 4500 kms I felt the heat only 3 times and the hot air comes towards your right leg only, you can just feel it but not an issue at all.

                    6. Very rare. It switched for me only 3 times and went through some extreme conditions and tours as well without the need for fan to kick in.

                    7. Both the suspensions are on the comfy side and very well suited for Indian roads.

                    8. Seat needs cushioning. The present seat is almost like barebones and it takes away the goodness of the soft suspension. I have done 400 kms in a stretch amidst ghat section completely with slight discomforts due to the seat. Anything more than 500 kms or 12+ hours of riding is not doable on this seat. Would definitely prefer an air seat or a gel seat.

                    Thank you.

Hi there, myself own MT15 and completed 1000km. 1st service done at 500km. I have a query. My mt15 vibrates a lot at 5000 to 7000 rpm and I can feel it on the handlebar and front foot pegs. Took to the service centre but no solution. Tried changing the handle bar end weights with heavy ones. To some extent it got reduced on the handlebar but not completely. Initial itself , I was disappointed as I expected a lot from this bike and Yamaha. Help me out.

The vibrations you feel, are absolutely normal. Give the bike to clock a few more thousand KMS and all the periodic services carried out. Once the engine beds in well, the vibrations will be reduced and you can feel the engine getting smoother. 5k and upwards the engine will smoothen out even more. Don't rush it. New vehicles will induce high heat, and mild vibrations as it's still bedding in. Take it easy on the vehicle, don't baby it, at the same time, don't over rev the crap out of it. Make sure your oil services are carried out periodically, chain lubed, your bike will become smoother.

                          Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
                          The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

hi everyone, I would like to raise the handlebar on my MT15 for touring comfort. Could anyone of you suggest a good place in Delhi NCR to get the job done.

I was looking on the lluvia webpage and they are only selling handlebar risers for Fz16 and Fz25. was wondering if anyone manufactures or sells similar risers for the Mt15.

On a side note I have another question to ask.. I was earlier riding a suzuki access 125 and the handlebar position was absolutely to my liking on that vehicle. It was pretty close to the rider and higher set, and I sat straight. When I bend even slightly on a motorcycle on moderate to high speeds I feel like Im losing balance and my confidence fades .. does it also happen with you riders? When I sit straight, like on the access, I feel ok and in control.
