Santosh set for world cross country debut

India's best off-road rider C S Santosh is all set to make his debut in the FIM World Cross Country championship which kicks off across the desert sands in Abu Dhabi this weekend. The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge will mark Santosh's first international rally raid attempt, coming on the back of his dominating victory at the gruelling Raid De Himalaya on his debut in October last year.
With all Dakar teams and riders using the event to test new equipment, the multiple Indian motocross and supercross champion will be up against some exemplary competition, including multiple-Dakar winner Marc Coma.

                      CS Santosh

An unfortunate incident yesterday caused me to retire from the race close to the the finish of day 3. I was airlifted to a hospital where I am now recovering and I should be up and about in good time. Thank you all for supporting my debut at the World Rally in Abu Dhabi would not have been possible without.

motorcycle caught fire on day four of the event, forcing him to drop out due to third degree burns.

The Indian was running well in the top 15 and was a few kilometers from crossing the finish line of the fourth leg of the six-day Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, when a fuel overflow issue and an overheating bike lead to a fuel fire which melted his riding gear and scarred parts of his body.

He was luckily rescued when a four-wheeler class competitor stopped by and was then evacuated to the hospital by a rescue chopper, where he underwent first-aid followed by skin grafting procedure.

Santosh, who is recovering from his surgery in Abu Dhabi

However, during the fuel transfer, some fuel overflowed and came in contact with hot engine parts, which resulted in an unexpected fuel fire, leaving Santosh with third degree burns and ending his rally prematurely.

Earlier in the week, Santosh had finished 16th in the qualifying runClick image for larger version

However, the first stage of the rally was cancelled as a powerful sandstorm with gusty winds and sand clouds led to dramatically reduced visibility, making it impossible for rescue helicopters to take off. In view of safety, organisers wisely decided to call off the action on day one.

The start was thus shifted to day two, where Santosh was the first to start the 250km stage. As expected, soft sands and spectacular but unforgiving dunes made progress difficult and he slipped down the order as he got to grips with the endurance genre of rallying.

At the end of the 250-kilometer stage on day two, Santosh was 14th in the 450 class (out of 29 riders) and 26th overall (out of 61 riders) in the standings.

Day three saw competitors negotiating an arduous distance of 284 kilometers and progress was difficult for Santosh as he fought to conserve the bike and his strength for the final two legs of the rally. He lost a few positions as a result and dropped to 19th in class and 33rd overall.

The fourth day dawned with riders set to cover 266 kilometers that made up leg four, and Santosh was feeling confident of the route ahead with just two more stages of the rally to go.

As he got into his stride and started to push closer to his pace from qualifying, he immediately started coming through the field, literally, overtaking riders on the stage.

As he was set to finish the stage comfortably in the top 15 with the finish almost in sight, disaster struck.

Santosh lost more precious seconds as he frantically tried to undo his riding gear and helmet with no success before deciding to roll himself in the sand to douse out the flames.

Luckily, in a gesture rarely experienced nowadays in the cut-throat world of motorsport, the crew of the BMW X-Raid team stopped to help Santosh and remained by his side until the rescue chopper arrived.

After being administered first-aid, Santosh underwent surgery in Abu Dhabi courtesy of the organisers, as they recognised the fact that he was the first Indian ever to participate in the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge which was first held in 1991.

Re: CS Santosh wins at the 12th Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm

Round 2 of the World Cross Country Rallies was held at Qatar, Sealine Cross Country Rally.

                              CS Santosh -

It is considered as the toughest navigation rally in the world. The stages are really long with an average SS being 400 kms.
I really struggled with the navigation the first 3 days and the 3rd being the hardest Navigation of the Rally.
The rally is notorious with rocks just everywhere and I had so many moments where I almost lost it.
On day 4 I crashed while I was navigating and ruptured my right fuel tank. I was able to isolate the fuel tank and finish the stage by running only the rear and front left tank.
Day 5 would was a delight I rode really good and at the end of the the 326 km stage I was 4 min and 50 seconds behind the stage winner. It was a moment that's even now hard to believe!
Final result was an 8th overall in the bikes and now I have also moved up to 8th in the world championship standings.
