  • Interview: Gaurav Gill

xBhp catches up with Gaurav Gill, the first Indian to win the Asia Pacific Rally Championship. He walks us through his career which started on two wheels in Motocross before he moved on to rally driving.

xBhp: Did you follow motorsports in your youth?
    Gaurav Gill:

    xBhp:
Who was the biggest inspiration behind you wanting to join motorsports?
Gaurav Gill: Well, my uncle was a professional rally driver and he was driving for some of the top teams in the national championship. So it was a natural progression in the family, since I would see rally cars, bikes, superbikes and my own family getting prepared to go out and drive. So it was natural that I got into this. Ever since I was a kid I always wanted something to do with speed, so motorsport was the obvious choice.

    xBhp:
When you first took up motorcycle racing what was your biggest hurdle?
Gaurav Gill: Motorsport in India is very complex; it was not a sport which you could choose as a career in the late 90s. There were a lot of hurdles that I faced along with all my competitors and friends. Mainly the lack of sponsorship, gear and equipment. Now it is a different scenario, it is 2015 and you can get what you want. We had very limited resources and we had to fight to convince our parents to get any money. I was lucky to get some sponsors with me; and get a ride with factory teams then. But I also endured lots of crashes and struggles to be here today in 2015.

    Re: Interview: Gaurav Gill

If i had to interview him

Me: GG, what are you famous for?
    GG: Winning blah blah blah

Me: What was your vehicle when you won the blah blah blah blah
    GG: A Skoda ss2000

    Me: What is that?
    GG: <surprised look> A rally car

    Me: Oh! A car.

Me: <gets up> Calls the organizer, utters expletives. Tells the organizer that we are a motorcycling magazine, and should actually feature people who have been famous for bikes, not rally drivers who ride motorcycles for recreation.

Of late there have been too many cars and car guys featured on xBhp, and I am not too happy about where India's first motorcycling magazine is going.

      Haha. Thanks for the feedback

Though i don't know about the too many 'car guys' featured on xBhp!?! (Those are meant to express surprise in a questioning manner and not a surprising question!)

If you had read the interview maybe you would be a little more happy and sad as well. Gaurav started off as a motorcycle rally rider, but had to give it up because of lack of equipment, competition and finally sanctioned events. It shows the struggle of motorsports in India.

Also since motorsports in India is still in its infancy (relatively), we feel the need to promote it, even if at times it is of people on four wheels. For example, the JK Tyre Race which was held at BIC recently. Cars and Bike races were held on the same day, because audiences are still tiny, so it needs to be clubbed together.

I hope this explanation will make you 'less' unhappy!
