    2011 Touring Features

Harley-Davidson expands its family of Great American Touring motorcycles with the debut for 2011 of the new Road Glide Ultra, a full-feature motorcycle with a frame-mounted fairing.

Harley-Davidson also introduces PowerPak, which bundles the Twin Cam 103 engine with ABS (anti-lock braking system) and the H-D Smart Security System as either standard equipment or an option on select Touring family models. PowerPak marks the first time Harley-Davidson has offered a factory-installed engine-upgrade option on a production motorcycle.

Harley-Davidson will offer eight Touring bikes for 2011, each featuring the satisfying character of V-Twin power and an appealing combination of technology and tradition that have made Harley models the most-popular heavy-weight touring motorcycles on the road.

    Road Glide Ultra

Harley-Davidson combines its Ultra level of luxury touring appointments with the wind-splitting aerodynamics and lighter handling of a frame-mounted fairing in the new Road Glide Ultra. The PowerPak is standard equipment on the Road Glide Ultra.

Other features include ventilated fairing lowers, a King Tour-Pak carrier with soft luggage liners and passenger backrest, electronic cruise control, and a premium Harman/Kardon Advanced Audio System with four speakers and a CB/Intercom system.

The Road Glide Ultra is a touring machine for riders ready to rack up some serious mileage.

    MSRP: $22,499

    PowerPak

A new combination of performance and technology, PowerPak combines the Twin Cam 103 engine with ABS and the H-D Smart Security System. PowerPak is a standard feature on the 2011 Road King Classic, Electra Glide Ultra Limited, and Road Glide Ultra models, and will be available as a factory-installed option on the 2011 Street Glide and Road Glide Custom models.

    • The Twin Cam 103 is rated at 102 ft. lbs. of torque at 3500 rpm, a 9.6-percent increase in peak torque over the Twin Cam 96 engine it replaces, extra power for enhanced passing and hill-climbing performance when a passenger and luggage are on board.

    • Harley-Davidson's Touring ABS works in conjunction with high-performance Brembo brakes to help the rider maintain control during braking events, especially those that happen in less-than-optimal conditions. The components of the Harley-Davidson ABS are virtually invisible, preserving the uncluttered styling of the area around the wheels. Harley-Davidson's ABS is not a linked system, meaning the rider maintains full, independent control of both front and rear brakes.

    • The H-D Smart Security System offers automatic self-arming and disarming through the Hands Free Fob, which communicates directly with the security module on an individualized frequency. When the rider switches off the ignition and leaves the proximity of the motorcycle, Smart Security System disables the vehicle starter, ignition and electronic fuel injection (EFI).

    MSRP: $1,995

    ABS and Smart Security Bundle

Any Touring model not equipped with PowerPak may be ordered with ABS and the H-D Smart Security System bundled together as a single factory-installed option. These items will no longer be offered as separate options.

    MSRP: $1,195

    Touring Seat Designs

The seats on all 2011 Harley-Davidson Touring models have been re-shaped to enhance styling, improve rider leg reach to the ground, and to provide better lower back support. A key element of the new seat designs is a narrower forward section of the seat, which makes it easier for more riders to place both feet confidently on the ground.

The new seat will on the FLHTK / FLHTCU / FLHTC in January of 2011 and on the FLTRU / FLHX / FLTRX / FLHR/C in July of 2011.

    Engineered for the Long Haul

The Harley-Davidson Touring chassis provides precise and responsive maneuverability, robust capacity and outstanding comfort for both rider and passenger. Its features include:

    • A single-spar, rigid backbone frame designed to satisfy the demands of long-haul touring riders and more-powerful engines. The frame is manufactured with the latest coordinated motion robotic welding process, which offers outstanding dimensional accuracy and weld quality. Components are joined with cast and forged node-tube joints.

    • The swingarm is formed with a two-piece, deep-drawn shell with a forged pivot section, and contributes significantly to the motorcycle's maneuverability and comfort.

    • Dunlop D407 Multi-Tread rear tires are designed specifically for the Harley-Davidson Touring chassis. The construction of the tires and the distribution of a longer-life center tread compound and more aggressive shoulder compound enhance straight-line performance and will deliver up to 25-percent more rear-tire tread life than a standard tire.

    • The Isolated Drive System compensator integrated into the rear wheel hub reduces noise and vibration to the rider for improved ride quality under acceleration, shifting and cruising.

    • Touring models are powered by the rubber-isolated Twin Cam 96 or Twin Cam 103 V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI) and Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), mated to the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission for outstanding performance and economy.

    • Factory-option cruise control is available for all models that do not come so equipped as standard equipment. All models also feature air-adjustable rear shocks to accommodate variable passenger and luggage loads.

On the FLHX and FLTRX riders might also be happy to find the return of the 2-1-2 Exhaust. This gives the rear of the motorcycle more of a balanced look. These changes were made due to customer feedback based on looks and cost to later upgrade to the dual pipes.

    2011 Harley-Davidsons released

Harley has released its 2011 line-up including three all-new models.

We’ve already covered the 2011 Sportster XR1200X, which was first shown in June, but we now have a price: $13,739. It’s a sporty offering with fully adjustable suspension, supersport-spec brakes and dirt-track inspired styling.

But there’s a new Sportster model that borrows elements from the XR1200X in an entirely different package.

The XL883L SuperLow is yet another Sportster variation, this one claiming the same 670 mm (25.5 in.) seat height as the Sportster Low, but with much improved handling and suspension response based on “lessons learned in the development of the XR1200X."

The improvements come via a change in wheel sizes from the former 16-inch rear and 19-inch front, to the XR1200X-inspired 17-inch rear and 18-inch front, while both ends now roll on radial tires.

Despite the larger rear-wheel diameter, use of a low profile tire has increased tire-to-fender clearance, allowing for more suspension travel without increasing the seat height.

Similarly, the smaller front hoop is claimed to improve steering response, as well as suspension compliance due to reduced mass and inertia. The front and rear suspension has also been recalibrated for improved compliance.

Starting at $9,309, Harley claims the 883 cc SuperLow will be the lowest-priced motorcycle in the company’s 2011 model line.

Finally, Harley has added a fully dressed dresser to its touring line-up with the new Road Glide Ultra. The $26,199 Road Glide Ultra features all the frills of the Ultra Classic Electra Glide but uses a frame-mounted fairing.

Upgrades over the standard Road Glide include a Twin Cam 103 (1,690 cc) engine, tour pack, fairing lowers, 80-watt Harmon/Kardon sound system, and everything else you’d want to make the long haul as comfy and entertaining as your home theatre. ABS, cruise control and the H-D Smart Security System are standard.
