Once the rein of the iconic bikes like the RD350 and RX100 ended Yamaha struggled for years to make an impact on the rapidly evolving Indian market. Things started to look promising after the company launched the R15 and FZ-16, a couple of years ago. Enthusiasts from across the country rejoiced as the company did what it does best by launching the performance oriented bikes.
But our country's mass commuter segment is so vast and at the pace it is growing the firm couldn't resist to get its share of the pie. It recently launched the SZ series, which is a tuned down variant of the FZ range, the YBR 125 and YBR 110 (yes, there are two YBRs now) which are aimed at the masses for city commuting. Also making a silent entry to its product line-up was the SS 125, which we had reported earlier.
The introduction of these new bikes has forced the Japanese two-wheeler major to discontinue older models like the Alba, G5 which have been replaced by the YBR 110 (Rs 46,000 OTR Pune). The bigger YBR 125 and the SS 125 (Rs 50,000 approx.) will carry the baton forward for old Gladiator that couldn't win many hearts in the Indian arena.
What remains to be seen is whether Yamaha's new strategy for the commuter segment will be more successful that its previous attempts. But we sure hope to see a lot more performance bikes from the Japanese giant.
