CANACONA: Seeking to regain lost glory in India, Japanese motorcycle major Yamaha is banking on products developed specifically for this market to drive sales, as also make an impact in the low-end volumes segment.
"Going forward, products unique to the Indian market such as the R15 and the newly launched FZ16 will play a major role in the revitalisation of Yamaha here," India Yamaha Motor (IYM) CEO and Managing Director Tsutomu Mabuchi said.
He said the company's future products in India would be developed keeping in mind the requirements of the market, just as Yamaha has done in other market such as China. Growth would come from newer offerings, both in the scooter and motorcycle categories, which would be specifically designed for the Indian market, he said.
"Our two new motorcycles were specifically designed for India. We would continue designing products specifically for this market which reflect global Yamaha DNA. Going forward, we want to be perceived as a premium bike maker in India with which youth of this country identifies," he said.
Yamaha, which recently overhauled its Indian operations, is investing Rs 800 crore to revamp operations and double its capacity to 800,000 units a year. Mabuchi said the company is looking to grab a 10 per cent share in the 7.2 million unit strong Indian two-wheeler market by 2010. Currently, it has 2.6 per cent share in the Indian motorcycle market.
Asked if the company would be depending only on performance oriented bikes to meet its target, Mabuchi replied in the negative and said the company was not ignoring the volumes segment.
"We would never exit that volume segment. We cannot afford to exit the segment. We would launch entry-level products which are not necessarily low-cost but which are different from those existing in the market," he added. He said the entry-level bikes would play a 'significant' role meeting the 2010 target, but declined to specify details. Besides, Yamaha would also be exporting the India 'unique' bikes to other markets,such as the South East Asian countries from next year onwards.
"R15 and FZ 16 define what Yamaha is all about and truly reflect our global product strategy. We have had a lot of enquiries for these two products and would start exporting them to various markets in the region by next year," Mabuchi said.
Yamaha launched its new 150 cc motorbike FZ 16 here on Saturday, priced at Rs 65,000 (ex-showroom). The company is targeting to sell 30,000 units of the product in the October-December period. "We have received a good response to R15 and given the price of FZ 16, expectations with the products are even more. We had targeted to sell 20,000 units of R15 in the first six months of its launch but we have already sold 10,000 units since July. The company would likely exceed the target for that product," IYM National Business Head Pankaj Dubey said.
