buddy, i actually agree with bking here... and the reason is very clear.. if i have to spend a week listening to excuses for getting my liscence, i would rather payup, enroll for a driving school, learn riding, and enjoy at the end of the fifth day...

dont take this personally, but on a different note, why is the government needed for inplementing the laws, they have made the laws, and they are very logical.. the gov cant keep a policeman at every signal to see if someone is skipping the rules.. what if the policeman itself is corrupt?? if he wrongly accuses you of skipping the lines?

you see, excuses are always there.

there is no law in country to wear all safety gear when riding bikes, but still, we do it cos we know that one day or other, we will thank ourselves for wearing them.. so the point is that if people are dumb enough not to follow rules, you just cant force them.. they will find a way to bypass it.
its the same even our community...

i had a couple of friends who joined xbhp with me and then left cos they were not willing to wear the safety gear.. so they are a part of some group on orkut or facebook and are still riding merrily.. so unless, the people are not enlightened about the danger that these "licenced to kill drivers", they will never follow it themselves..

The 1000 bucks in question is not a bribe.. it is more like a tip. I tip a restaurant security guard Rs.10 to take care of my bike when it is loaded with saddle bags so that I can have a peaceful 1/2 hour rest alongwith my lunch / dinner.

In the same way, people tend to tip agents at the RTO for their for getting their license procedure done with them resting( in this case working) or the remainder of the week. It is like a budding service industry there. You pay for the services you get. Either you waste 4 office leaves to get your license done without paying the service charge / tip , or, work for 3.5 of the 4 days and earn much more than a 1000 bucks from your day job, pay up the service charge of 1000, save your leaves, and still earn a net profit(saved money). So, in effect, tipping/ paying service charge(in other words bribery) turns out to be a more cost effective and financially smart way to spend your time. You can kill me for having an opinion, but this is mine.

P.S.: This does not mean the process shouldn't be streamlined and quickened. Thats the way it actually is, take it or leave it.

P.P.S.: Even if going through agents, most of them (in Maharashtra) insist on the applicant appearing and passing the driving test. So it isn't as bad as it sounds.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I'm glad you took it positive; there's no appointment system. BUT FOR SURE, the inspector usually has a specific time for testing 2 & 4 wheeler, verifying RC book.

At RTO, I see most people shivering in front of the inspector & I personally think that is because they're not aware of their rights. Once ppl know that, they can dare to ask questions if the inspector makes unnecessary statements. But again, talk polite yet firm. That's endless discussion.

Ok, no issues; but this is again promoting an organized crime too!!! Like I said before the correction cannot happen bottom-top, it should be TOP-BOTTOM.

Yes, there're valid points. But wait, I'll complete the remaining story...

So the cop accuses you phoney to make money right? So what do I do? Approach the court & challenge the cop right? Cop has to prove that I jumped signal. So a device probably? Like a CCTV? He MUST show to the court that I jumped. If he cannot, I'm freed, if he does, then I'm truly at fault - Got the point?

NO!!! There're always people who're there to jump the law at drop of a hat; same in our community & hence we've all the Mods to do the job. If there's a LAW, there SHOULD be ENFORCEMENT!!! Nothing works on its own. Even with the strictest enforcement in the west, there're lots of violations, then imagine the situation what would happen if there's no enforcement.

If you don't mind the OT, all states in US have speed limit atleast 70 & some 80 mph; one of the lowest is OH where the speed limit is 65 mph. People still violate the norm & they carry cop detectors, so it signals whenever it spots a cop car beaming the signal within 1/2/5 mi (prices vary to capture the signals); this is quite common.

In state of OH it doesn't work this way; why? The cops patrol the gun from top through copters. So there's always a threat when one goes above 65 mph!!! That is ENFORCEMENT!!!

ROTFLMAO; buddy are you serious? Are you calling that RTO thing as tip? Let me clarify the difference between bribe & tip.

Tip - This is paid when you're happy with any service
Bribe - This is paid TO DO the job; in the west people pay this to get things done out of the way; for example, if someone wants a permit to drive through a prohibited land, they can bribe the officials to get a permit. But in our country, the money is paid to get the work done for something that they're supposed to do ; grow up kid!!!

Kid, those morons are paid by the Govt to serve you within reasonable amount of time!!!

Would you pay a bearer in a hotel each time he comes to your table so that he would serve you faster? Grow up!!!!

Most outrageous statement!!! Budding service industry? huh!!!! Mods, please!!!

I'll give you an example Antz, your friend is a victim of an accident, he's loosing blood fast, you take him to a nearest hospital & get first aid, but the condition is serious & they ask you to take to Govt General Hospital. Now you go over there & the doc is attending few patients & he doesn't understand your emergency, the medicines are available but not provided to you, call to nurses are falling to deaf ears. Why? They expect you to "TIP" (extreme case, one has to ), tell me, isn't the Dr supposed to attend this emergency case? Isn't that his duty? Isn't that the oath he's undertaken in his education?

Understand very well, TIP & BRIBE are not same; Bribe is something you pay to get things out of rules, but in this country, you bribe to get things done which you're entitles. Atleast the former is acceptable, but the latter is what is pulling down this entire country. Its like taking 1 step forward & 2 steps backward. India is shinning, but CORRUPTION is also shinning - No Good!!!

PS - Would you want to see where we stand on corruption?
Corruption by country. Definition, graph and map.

EDIT - Would you like to scream at the middle of the night - http://trak.in/tags/business/2009/06...ribery-report/
DEFINITION: Total acquitted in criminal courts. Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence.
        Statistics - http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cr...rime-acquitted

So what I kept saying is proven above!!!

        Guys!!! Stop tolerating, start acting!!!
