  • Yamaha to launch gearless scooters in India

Japanese two-wheeler maker Yamaha today said it is ready to launch gearless scooters in the Indian market to tap the potential in the segment.
"We have completed the feasibility study and plan to launch new gearless scooters in the Indian market shortly," India Yamaha Motor National Business Head Pankaj Dubey told PTI here.

"We will enter the market with exciting products in the scooter segment. We are confident that our products will do well...Gearless scooters are more in demand in the market," Dubey said.

He, however, declined to give any time-frame for the launch of the scooters.

The Japanese major is well-known for its gearless technology for two-wheelers worldwide. The company sells more scooters compared to motor-cycles in the Asian market.

"We are good in both technology and product in the scooter segment globally," he said.

The company has conducted the feasibility study to focus on areas such as the model to be introduced and a possible time-frame for launching the product in the Indian market.

Asked whether gearless scooters would be manufactured from its existing plant in India, Dubey declined to comment.

However, the likelihood of them being manufactured from its existing plants (where it makes motor-cycles) is high.

"The domestic market is conducive for gearless scooter. Globally, we are very strong in the scooter segment...We are confident of a good performance here as well," Dubey said.

Yamaha has manufacturing units at Surajpur in Uttar Pradesh and Faridabad in Haryana and produces motor-cycles both for domestic and overseas markets.

WOW WOW WOW...this is most awaited news!!! Though I'll not replace my Activa, but, this is definitely a great news. Hope they too don't flood the market with "yet another" 100 or 125cc.

I'm really looking forward for something in 150cc & power of atleast 14 bhp. If YMIS does this, then...I'd say a Good Bye to my Activa

Well I tried to put this news tommorow but as I was outside I could not put it with use of my mobile. This is ofcource a great news and surely the days of seeing boring scooters in the roads are coming to end.I personally like Yamaha's BW 125 & Fino very much and hopefully Yamaha launches one of them.

A very good strategical move by yamaha. Almost all the scooters are having long waiting periods booked by impatient people. The only company without a long waiting list is mahindra. So if yamaha enters this segment then many people will turn towards it since the mahindra lacks on the quality & service centers. Things will turn even hotter when the bajaj enters the battle.

The yamaha should keep a good decent price on the scooters instead of overpricing them if it wants to score good on sales chart.

Hmmm...inability to match the market demand is no way to be called "impatience".

Think about it, you need an EB connection, you filled up all forms, submitted all necessary docos, paid all the fees, ideally one should expect the connection within reasonable times. What if one doesn't get it? Call them impatience?

No Madhav, I don't think any customer should be called "impatient people". After all everyone's paying through nose all the money upfront to get the vehicle & if the manufacturer cannot deliver, who's to be blamed?

I'm glad to see BAL moving out of the game & then the entire scooter market growing up.

I would expect a decent storage space under the seat (oh!!! not again saying your helmet fits in kind of stuff), 8-10 lts of fuel tank capacity, automatic, disc as optional, BRIGHT HEADLAMPS , good looks & great power.

If YMIS does the same as Activa, then it only becomes a space for people who cannot with hold Activa's waiting period. What does YMIS wants to launch? A different scooter offering a better VFM OR a gap filler?

Personal view: I really dont think we have a proper scooter in India which can take a 140-170 load of a husband-wife, son-mom, bf-gf (120 for them..) with ease...
This is specially considering the kind of tummys male Indians develop after marriage. Our female counterparts reveal true essence of machine destructing weights after marriage as well....
And hence a total payload is around ~150 kg generally. And if a kid accompanies it goes up to many more kgs...

All of them (scooters) die once both/complete family is riding together ....All of them are underpowered...!
165cc Kinetic was not huge it was massive and more oriented towards sportiness....

I would want a light 150cc commuter scooter (for gods sake no Eterno kind of bulk) producing 9-10 bhps, 10-11Nm torque at justified price...

                    Hope someone's listening....!

                    Yamaha....!

Once I'd ridden my Uncle's Activa that was 5 yrs old, then, along with a friend of mine & 2 cousins around our friend's tea estate in KL; the estate had small climb ups along with straight lines; the total weight could've be around easily 4 X 70 = 280 Kg!!! The scooter didn't struggle to climb hills, but it took it slowly though!!!

Myself & Wifey put together weigh about 130+ & we could do 75 Kmph anyday on our 6 yrs old Activa
