  • Beijing to cut car registrations to ease traffic

BEIJING: Authorities in Beijing said Thursday they would slash the number of new cars hitting the streets in 2011 as they try to ease the Chinese capital's massive traffic jams.

The city will allow 240,000 passenger cars to be registered next year through a license plate lottery system, city government officials told reporters.

The figure is about one-third of the number of new cars registered in the capital this year. The new rules take effect on Friday.

But authorities admitted that the registration cap along with other measures such as higher parking fees in the city centre and stricter enforcement of traffic rules would not automatically ease the chronic gridlock.

"It will be difficult to dramatically improve the traffic situation in a short time," said Li Shaoming , deputy director of the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau .

"But it can slow down the pace of worsening traffic congestion."

Expectations that the government was going to restrict the number of new number plates issued next year sparked a surge in car sales this month, with more than 20,000 cars sold in the first week of December, state media said.

That was more than double the 9,000 cars sold in the same period last year.

Beijing's air is among the most polluted in the world, and the problem is getting worse amid high demand for private vehicles from its increasingly affluent residents.

The number of registered cars in Beijing stood at 4.8 million on Thursday with 750,000 new cars hitting the streets this year, officials said.

Talk about indisciplined traffic, lack of enforcement, no civic sense, "me first" attitude, potholed roads - I'm willing to undergo these pains rather than Chinese measures to ease up traffic. Jai Hind. India Rocks!!!

Instead of something like Bejing, how about improved and more roads from the road and petrol tax we are paying???

PS: Although, I should admit that roads have improved dramatically in the past few years...

              i don't enjoy it.

that's why i'm more than happy to welcome an rule that would offer me less of it.

fewer vehicles on the road means less "mad peak hour traffic"...
less honking... less indisciplined traffic sense & traffic violations.

                  It does!!!

One should be made to run to court to pay on a certain weekday to pay a fine of Rs 50 for not stopping before stop line, Rs 50 for jumping signal & yes, absolutely no undertable business.

When someone rides on wrong way, they should be sent to court & on repeated offense they should be imprisoned with or without fine. Once people know that they're wasting their time, they'll start following the rules.

Another enforcement is to make a mandate passing the written exam at RTO, ofcourse with strict supervision & people should be able to get license as long as they meet all the criteria of RTO. Instead of H/I/J/K, law must be changed to demonstrate parallel parking for test.

Though the camera's are installed, they're used only for carrying postmortem. Instead, they should be effectively used for preventing incidents.

My tiniest brain could only think of all these, but I conclude this by asking - Is this possible?

NOT "Beijing to cut car registrations to help curb traffic violations."

u've stated a half dozen ways to fine traffic violators...
i don't see how enforcing the law solves overpopulation tho.

none of what u've mentioned helps serving the purpose of "easing traffic"...

Oh you commies... You n Your funny solutions continue to amaze me!

A question to all those who are in favour of this law have you ever woke up at 5 am on a Monday morning to board a bus at 6 after wrestling your way through a mob which is so packed with people you can't even move your hand to scratch your arse while your fellow travellers carry pathogens like TB or swine flu with a sweet scent of cigarettes, alcohol, body odour and un brushed teeth on a bus with no heater on day outside temp is -16 for a 1.5 hrs ride? If no then you don't have any idea what life is like for an average chinese living in Beijing.

P.S. 80% of Beijing's high risers are empty. If you knew how much is paid in blood and pain for this growth you would know it's not worth it.
                        When in doubt...... Gas it!

totally agree with you on this my man you have my internets for one day. LAW enforcement will work for only a few weeks or months at the max lol after that the enforcers themselves get fed and start accepting "on the spot payment of fines" know what I mean? hahahaha The number of cars have jumped due to the easy going loan rates I guess The govt needs to intervene and do something about the whole traffic mess. Oh and building better and wider roads etc etc I don't see how that could solve the problem as far as long term goals are concerned
