  • Will motorbikes catch on in the Gulf?

The youth in the Gulf know what they like - expensive cars, the latest mobiles and designer sunglasses. But rarely do they go for motorbikes.

To help change that perception, small groups of amateurs and semi-professionals are working hard with custom built "super bikes" to get motorbike racing off the ground.

They are founding leagues at the various local circuits. Sponsors are flooding in to help with the expense of this fledgling industry.

However, it is not all easy going. Most parts have to be imported and the movement's too young for local entrepreneurs to get in on the act.

And this is a dangerous sport. In the last ten weeks, there has been one fatal accident and several others where riders suffered serious injuries. Can the league survive and flourish in such an environment?

One of the main reasons why ppl stay of Motorcycles in the Gulf is the, weather.
I dont think the interest in bikes have to do much about it.Motorcycles for commuting isn't all that practical in the Gulf.

      YouTube - ‫???? ????? BiKers iN Saudi Arabia‬‎

The Saudis love to ride their bikes... this video is just a small sample. I've lived there long enough to tell you this. The weather is without any doubt, the biggest reason why people prefer cars over bikes. And you get to see these bikers in the evening ONLY, thanks to the sweltering heat.

Its so true, even when I went to Kuwait in year 1999 guys use to move out at evening only, performing same kind of wheelies right from the crossroads !

          Hi Sunny,
Motorbiking is catching up in UAE, at least in Abu Dhabi. I see many superbikes on road in Abu Dhabi, not for the love of bike but due to traffic and parking woes. As mentioned in above thread the main drawback for bikes in Gulf region is the extremely hot temperature. Even then I have been riding Blackbird form last 11 years for pleasure.

I used to live in the middle east a long (16 years) time ago, Riyadh etc. I would have issues more with the traffic in-city. Also not too many (if any?) twisties to whet my appetite.

I have ridden through Death Valley, CA, USA quite a few times when the barometer hit 49 degrees celsius. I wasn't too uncomfortable. Then again, I did have a camel-back and was sipping water at regular intervals .

Ah, middle east videos/pix are very nostalgic. Ride safe, later.

Yup, the weather has been the biggest factor, also I believe there are some restrictions to riding bikes on inter-city expressways. This was a very long time ago so I'm not sure where the law stands on things now.
Some very fond motorcycling memories from Jeddah are suddenly flooding my brain on reading this..., my old Honda CT70 I used to thrash around a private track(well it was a track to me anyways :P ) in my school days, or my first superbike rides CBR1000, Genesis and the super fun Africa Twin.
But yeah bikes have been quite popular always but only after the sun went down. Heck even the cops used to ride late 80's CB750s in those days, but with plenty of tracks in the region now I guess performance biking may be going mainstream which is cool. The UAE is generally more biker friendly though from what I remember

weather and safety are two things which keeps most people away from bikes. the two major catagories of bikers in the Gulf are the courier.s riding Pulsar.s, Unicorns,CBX250, RX100 etc.. and the elite few riging R1,CBR,GSX etc..

they dont regard life much in the gulf esp the local kids and what all they do!!...and its too good a road to hold you up from twisting that throttle so thats why there are many fatal accidents...and its kind of like here in India like the show off thing is verymuch there as most bikes cost as much as cars there eventhough we cant compare those car or bike prices with India!!...even here its kinda like that if you look...a honda city would be about 9 laks here where as a hayabusa sells for 13 laks...in the gulf when you can get a brand new FJ Cruiser or 107000 dhs an R1 costs 51800 dhs!! so even there the biker is automatically the elite class as he is buying a two wheeler where as he can easily afford a four wheeler!!!
smoking weed is for kids.....i smoke asphalt!

yeah guys these guys dont care much about their lives,,,they are ready to smoke the rubber at any part of the road..mainly in traffic signals they do perform stunts...its really a risky business to speed up inbetween the fast moving cars...i have seen a lot of custom made bikes,,,there are lot many number of Harley made custom bikes,,,the Harley guys move in a group with black jackets and coolers with chicks behind.really a treat to watch,,,and the exhaust note is just scarry...mostly in summer only few bikes adopt riding during day time else its gonna wet them hole.the bikes are way cheaper out here and in second hand we can get light used bikes for half the price with brand new condition.i used to see lot of super bikes on my office parking lot,,few i have clicked

It never will... Too many cheap supercars, too much bloody money and EXCESSIVE HEAT will always prevent it... My cousin in Saudi loves bikes... But he will never buy one... He is a billionare... But too scared of the heat... And his wife...
