Things seem to be getting back at TVS. Reminds me of the days when TVS did Major comparitive advertising.

It was 1998 when I was just a Kid and I used to love reading those huge 1 page ads in the Times of India. They used to compare their Ind-Suzuki AX 100 with the Hero-Honda CD 100. Claiming that they had just 3 moving parts in their engine compared to HH's 30! Can't remember of they compared mileage, but they must've compared power and lower maintenance!

The governement sure killed 2-strokers in the country, but I read in Overdrive that India has the Stringest 2-wheeler pollution and sound norms in the world for new vehicles. Next only to Taiwan. We are way ahead of even the US (including California state) in this regard.

Lets see the Outcome of the only surviving engine-oil burner in the country. Unless we get those superb fuel injection 2 stroke Aprilia based engines I can't see much of a future for new 2 strokers here. Even the age old Bajaj Chetak and the M-80 are now in 4 Stroke versions!

Glifford Max100R is not the only 2st bike still selling ... Even RXZ 5-speed is still selling.

Right now I'm riding a samurai (as my bike is at service station and bullet was a bit too powerful to ride in city straight away)

I think that samurai/max100r has a good low end torque ... I was able to ride the bike at around 20-25 in 4th without ne knocking sound. Same is also possible in Victor .. Was not able to do in splendor .. no idea about boxer.

Also my friend who has a samurai gets a mileage of around 50 in city.

Looks like Bajaj is getting frustrated with the gap between him and hh increasing (so sued hh) and with TVS closing the gap, in sales figures I can imagine how hard big bosses at Bajaj will be screwing their marketing guys [][xx(]

Agreed NAV, corrected bout the last man standing (not its two, both the RXZ and the MAX 100).

No specific support for Bajaj, but the article also mentioned Yamaha, who is now the only wholly owned bike company by the Japs.

And tho' TVS is playing catch with its Victor, the growth rates of Bajaj are sure higher than that of HH. After all it is clear market dynamics. How long can a market leader grow faster than all of its competition? http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/...ow?msid=144760

And there were two comments I was making with the article....no offences against TVS...it is yet another proud Indian manufacturer now making bikes on its own accord.

      1. TVS years ago.. had compared its engine..one on one with the only 4-stroke engine (besides the Bullet) at that time. Today the tables have turned, now its surviving 2 stroke engine is being compared one on one by two separate manufacturers with their 4 stroke engines.

      2. I know 2 strokes are cheap to manufacture, maintain and run. They give enormous power for their capacity (the RD and RX are testimony to it). But what concerns it is the pollution. Because they burn the 2T oil and also leave a lot of unburnt fuel, they are thermodynamically ineffecient. It is said that 1 2 wheeler engine pollutes as much as 6 car engines! So how long can 2 stroke engines move freely in India?

agree on the polution that 2st makes.

But when it will come to compare a 2st bike with a 4st bike ... one on one .. except for the polution that 2st makes ... the benifits of 2st are not less than the benifits of 4st.

Now just comparing for mileage ... will bajaj/yamaha will try to comapre the city ridebility of their 100cc 4st bikes with the 100cc 2st bike? As the people who buy these bikes are those who will be riding these bikes in city .. so they prefer less gear shifts. (Just my thoughts)

          hmm..that's true..

But sadly the Indian Consumer has now become a mileage maniac (good in the general interest of the country and the environment). They will do anything to buy a bike that claims to manage to squeeze more out of the last drop of fuel. But on the other hand they will do nothing to change thier ineffienent riding habits like setting a decently low idling RPM, switching off the engine at decently long signal stops and all.

So rideability will be on a lower priority.

Tell any junta on the street that a new Bike is launched... the first thing they will ask is.. Mileage kya hai ? often even before they look at the bike and ask its price.

So the manufacturers are trying to increase the sales by catering to this segment.

Yes the Max100 had an excellent engine (so did all of the othet 2stroke manufacturers). But TVS is trying a shortcut to the entry level segment with its 2 st work horse engine. Not a bad idea but will have to see how the customers take it.

They made great success out of the excellent Victor and guess that's a kind of product the Indian customers are looking for! Something new.. nomething stylish...may not be a hand me down!

Nav, this is a bike forum so I was talking of only Bikes...not mopeds, scooters and step thru's.

If U want to include TVS 50s and TVS XLs, please allow three wheelers as well (as TVS is planning to Jump into the 3 Wheeler game too!)

We all know that the market for geared scooters is on a decline!

Add around 20,000 more for the three wheelers.

And comparing Motorcycles one on one:

Bajaj: Motorcycle sales grew by 16.8 per cent year-on-year to 76,487 units from 65,475 units.

TVS:Its motorcycles sales in August grew 6 per cent at 62,234 units compared with 58,636 units sold in the same period last year.

                    My mistake.

Well agreed that right now bajaj is ahead in bike sales. But lets see one more thing here.

hh has (cd100, cd100ss, splendor, passion, joy, dawn, cd dawn, ambition, cbz, karizma) = 10 bikes/models.
                    bajaj has (boxer, croma, aspire, caliber115, wind125, p150, p180, elim ) = 8 bikes/models
                    tvs has (max100r, victor, f2) = 3 models.
So don't u think that way TVS is able to keep up with hh and bajaj with very less models?

U've got the models Slightly wrong Nav!

Joy and Dawn are now replaced by just CD Dawn! Not sure bout the CD 100 SS

Bajaj Has long since given up the Croma, Aspire, Caliber etc.. by the Caliber 115. Ofcourse U missed the Byk. The Wind is just in... in that case U should have the Centra as well.

And yes TVS has now 2/3 new variants (if I am not mistaken) available for the Victor, some customised for City Riding some for rural! So if U consider them as one model, then Pulsar 150 and 180 are just variants of the same model!

But I agree that TVS has made the numbers with fewer models, but the differences might not be that great!.

Coz I'm not sure the Byk and Elim clock as many numbers as the other segment bikes.

Was not sure about joy and dawn. Hey I still see some new croma though not seen aspire for long.

Centra is not yet launched in the market all over but wind is launched all over.

Talking of variants I hope u know what a variant means ... same engine and chassis but diff name/looks/features. In case of pulsar they are two diff engines. Also if victor (normal and GL) has variants so do boxer (ct, xt, at) ... to keep things simple I just left out the variants. you want to include them also in count? Then p150 ES, p150 KS so on and so forth.

byk and elim out ... hey this is not correct ... if there is a model for sale then u have to count that
