  • Mahindra Racing Debut

Mahindra Racing’s official bike, the GP125 took to the track for the first time in its corporate colours at the final day of testing at a predominantly wet, windy and cold Estoril circuit in Portugal.

The Indian team was present with riders Danny Webb and Marcel Schrotter as well as Team Principal Mufaddal Choonia, who made the trip from Mahindra Corporate Headquarters in Mumbai to see the bike in action.
The GP125, designed and built by Mahindra’s own Italy-based Engines Engineering, ran for only a handful of laps in its silver and red livery before the team switched back to plain black for testing duties.
Speaking on Mahindra’s participation in the MotoGP Championships, Mr. Anand Mahindra, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Mahindra Group, said, “It is a matter of great pride for us to be the first Indian motorcycle manufacturer to participate in the world’s most prestigious motorcycling event. MotoGP is the ultimate test in motorcycle racing and an immensely popular event with an extremely loyal fan following. Mahindra motorcycles will compete with the best in the world and it will be an ideal opportunity for us to showcase our strengths in the engineering and IT domains.”
“Today was very special for me as I saw the bike on track for the first time in Mahindra’s colours and I am happy to say it looks good,” said Mr Choonia. “It was a difficult test as the weather conditions were very poor for testing, but the laps we managed were very encouraging and built on the progress we made in last week’s three-day test at Valencia.”
The Mahindra Group is the first Indian motorcycle manufacturer to enter a team into the prestigious FIM Road Racing World Championship and taking to the track today with the GP125 in its corporate colours was 19 year-old British rider Danny Webb.
“The weather really was awful in Estoril, and about the only time we had a clear sky was when I went out with the silver and red,” said Danny.
“The bike looks mega and the colours really stand out so I’m happy about that. Valencia was good as I got to know everyone in the team so we were able to move forwards here despite the bad weather.
Marcel Schrotter was also dodging the rain to get some kilometres under the wheels of the GP125.
“It was a good feeling riding the bike here and in Valencia,” said the 18 year-old German. “Everyone in the team is working well and we’re making good progress. The bike looks great and everything is in place to develop it to my riding style.
“If we get some good dry running in Jerez I am confident we’ll be well placed for Qatar.”
Mahindra Racing will next be in action at Jerez in Spain for a three-day test on March 4-6 ahead of the season opening round as part of the Qatar Grand Prix on March 17-20.

Who needs more than 70 bhp when you don't need to slow down for the corners?

Thats a good begining, I hope Mahindra's PR wakes up and announces this loud and clear, this could be a nice way to get attention in the auto industry and its 'sleeping' market!

Hopefully they'll participate in 2012's Moto3 and develop a new bike for the same.

Agree. They have done the tough part. Now they need to market this properly to be accepted by the Indian masses as a manufacturer of high end bikes that are a viable alternative to the major players.

I wonder how "INDIAN" is this team ?
Does the team operate as an "Indian team" the way FORCE INDIA operates as an "Indian Team" ?
I hope it does operate as an "Indian Team" and not as an "Italian Team" sponsored/owned by an Indian Manufacturer.

Because we dont have enough racing talent as of now. Things would change soon though. May be a year down the line, and M&M pitching in the Indian racing scene and scout talent from there! We have WTR already, who knows may be we will see a merger of synergies soon! Both M&M and Kingfisher wanted to play it safe and make a mark in the scene...though I feel M&M would probably be the first one to jump with an Indian rider!

I get all the wrong ideas when you say operate as an Indian team

Let us look at this as a business and not a patriotic activity. I am sure Force India and Mahindra would be more than happy to put in an Indian driver in the seat. That will give them far more leverage. But if they are able to get a better driver, it makes no sense to put money down the drain in name of patriotism. Things here in India are not same like Japan where they field a complete team (Super Aguri) just for a driver (Takuma Sato). And we all know how many points did he score.

whats the motto behind Mahindra's foray into moto GP? is it like "Racing improves the breed" so they'll be developing a bike for the international markets, or just to promote Mahindra as an International Brand?

I disagree with you....at this point and time there cannot be any business perspective, they are looking at creating a team and once they establish and over a period of time then they would get business out of it. Not speaking about patriotism and all, lets see local talents before coming into a conclusion on something.

I know we are not grown to the levels of creating teams for riders

It had to happen.. the big bucks and the big pockets are now here.. and no longer in Europe or US... We are finally getting to the world stage.. and its an incentive more than anything for motor racing to grow and develop in india to push us futher on this.. A couple of more tracks, and a couple of more companies joining this wont hurt at all..

The important thing is, we own em.. and we are running em.. this is the start... Its not gonna be far looking at the talent we got down south that we would be running an all indian outfit soon...
