no no... tha calculation methods are wrong... you cant just reduce 60% o 5.5L... refer to my previous post...

    currently we get it at retail price + 60% = 100 + 60 = 160 (which is 5,50,000)

so to arrive at the correct retail figure we have to use the formula 160/160*100 = 100 (which is 5,50,000/160*100) = 3,43,750

and then we add our registration and insurance and other basic taxes which will make it close to 4.25L

Or for the 3L Ninja.... Its market share just dipped further.

First the CBR250R, and those who prefer exclusivity, will head to the bigger and more iconic HD!

                    Harley dismisses India factory reports

Source: Harley dismisses India factory reports | The Business Journal

Reports coming out of India that Harley-Davidson has had a change of heart and will build motorcycles from scratch outside the United States for the first time ever are being dismissed by the company as rumor and speculation.

The Indian Express, an English-language newspaper in India, recently reported that the iconic Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer plans to open a “mother plant,” not just an assembly factory as originally announced, in India as the country gears up bike sales in the market. A similar report also appeared on IndianCarsBikes.in, which features blogs purportedly written by automotive journalists and road test editors.

“As you can imagine, we see market rumors and media speculation of all kinds coming out of India on a regular basis and don’t comment on them, just as we don’t comment on all kinds of rumors in the U.S. about a range of topics,” Harley-Davidson spokesman Bob Klein told me in an e-mail. Klein insisted that the company’s focus remains on the startup of its assembly operation in India. Harley is launching 14 models in the market and has been working to develop retail sales while creating a dealer network in India, Klein said. Harley-Davidson has operated an assembly plant in Brazil since 1999 but has never produced motorcycles from the ground up outside of the United States. The company announced last November that it would launch assembly operations in India for motorcycles that will be sold in the Indian market. Company management said at the time that motorcycles would be assembled from component kits supplied by its U.S. plants. Producing motorcycles in India for the Indian market would make them more affordable. The company expects the assembly plant to be operational in the first half of 2011.

To date, Harley-Davidson India has been importing completely assembled motorcycles from the company’s U.S. final assembly plants. The component kits that will be assembled in India will be subject to a 10 percent tariff, as opposed to fully completed motorcycles, which have a 60 percent tariff.

                      OUCH!!

But then again for the last statement... I think they might scrap the assembly plant as well... considering the government has removed the duty concession...

^ Yeah, the new budget had a silly fine print! All said and done. the 'why' for your HD is more important than 'how' you get your Harley.
So keep the dream alive! I have my sights on the Iron 883.
                        10 Commandments:
1)Thank thy God for being alive.
2)Thou shalt respect one's own life and the live's of other road users.
3)Thou shalt respect one's own bike.
4)Love thy bike as thy self.
                        5)Always wear safety gear.
                        6)Alcohol is a strict NO!
7)Thou may lust after thy neighbour's bike specially if its of the R1 kind!
8)Thou shalt ride with 'ultra-most' care and caution when on Indian roads.
9)Thou shalt never leave the engine running at long traffic halts.
10)Thou shalt follow all of the above.

Source - Harleys at INR 3.3 Lakhs: Why not? | Indian Cars & Motorcycles Blog

The past few days have been anything but joyous and hope filled for the Indian automotive enthusiast like never before. Right from the India-EU Free Trade Agreement(FTA) which could make luxury cars manufactured in the European Union to the Indo-Japan FTA which simply could translate into cheaper spare parts for high end Japanese motorcycles as well as cheaper imports from Japan. Now, here is another massive bit of buzz that could potentially have motorcycle enthusiasts dreaming and dreaming big.
Indian Alphonso mangoes turned sweeter when they were exchanged for Harley Davidson to set shop in India. Barack Obama’s visit to India, earlier this year seems to have further sweetened the deal for motor heads as Harley Davidson is making a massive shift in tack. Now, instead of merely setting up an assembly facility to assemble CKD kits from the United States, Harley Davidson India will now go the whole hog and manufacture it’s cult motorcycles in India, ground up. And this includes an Indian vendor base as well since Harley Davidson is aiming at a “mother plant”, which will be the first of it’s kind outside of it’s manufacturing facilities at USA.

What will then happen? You and me can finally start dreaming big. Dreaming of riding on the rapidly improving Indian highways, with the wind in our faces, with the soul stirring exhaust of the engine, with what motorcyclists cherish the most, the absolute freedom in the heart, the freedom of being one with the open road. Just you and the machine and the road. Sorry for the circumvention, but in other words, Harley Davidsons could be sold for as low as INR 3.3 Lakh as manufacturing in India is a whole load cheaper than that of America. And with Indian vendors making Harley parts, it won’t get better than this.

As Indian manufacture of Harley Davidsons begin, Harley will also start exporting it’s made-in-India motorcycles to other emerging markets where Harleys sell for steep prices due to their high manufacturing costs in Uncle Sam country. So, what that means is more jobs for Indians in India and more sales for Harley, in India as well as in other emerging markets. A win-win situation, ain’t it? As for the Japanese big four, this should serve as a good enough reason to contemplate at least CKD assembly operations to gain the all important volumes as the Indian elephant’s purchasing power peaks.

Meanwhile, we’re still perplexed at why the folks at Financial Express are going hammer and tongs at Harley for setting up base in India, with them even going to suggest that national interests have been replaced by corporate interests. Sounds very, very leftish. All said, right here, on ICB, we carried a wordy piece on how India could save Harley Davidson, and just in line with our analysis, it really seems to be happening. And that, if not anything else is one more reason for you to stop by everyday at Cars Bikes India | New Cars 2011 | New Motorcycles 2011 | Indian Auto Reviews.
I guess the global manufacturers are coming of age than indian manufacturers. We have been hearing of respectable motorcycles coming in for a long long time now but no actions till date.
