  • Duty Concession on electric battery imports to boost e-bikes!

This year's Union Budget is likely to pump in some steam into the sales of electric bikes in the country that use imported batteries to power them.

The country does not have an indigenous manufacturer of electric batteries now, and they are mostly imported from China. Sohinder Gill, chief executive officer of Hero Electric said, "Currently, there is no indigenous manufacturer of electric batteries in the country. All batteries are imported."

Reading out the Union Budget of 2011-12, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said that the full exemption from basic customs duty and a concessional rate of central excise duty of 4 per cent for specified parts of electric vehicles that was announced in the last budget would be extended to batteries imported by manufacturers.

This would result in a reduction of around Rs 1500 in the cost of an electric battery that now costs around Rs 6500. A consumer needs to replace the battery of his bike once a year. As Gill explains, reduction in battery cost is equivalent to reduction in fuel cost for an electric vehicle. "At the current rate of 22 per cent import duty, manufacturers can pass on the benefit to the consumers and reduce the cost of the battery."

If one drives his bike for 40 kilometers per day on an average, considering cost of petrol at Rs 60 approximately and the consumer using his bike for 300 days a year, the cost of fuel works out to be around Rs 18,000. "In case of an electric bike, the major cost is replacement of the battery, and cost of recharging is minimal. One can save around Rs 12,000 a year on an e-bike.", Gill says.

Most buyers are concerned about the replacement cost of the battery when they buy an e-bike, he adds. Bike makers expect a resurgence in demand for e-bikes thanks to the budget support, however, also feel that the pick up in sales would be a slow starter.

At present, e-bike sales is less than one per cent of the petrol two-wheelers sold in India. Around 90,000 e-bikes sell annually.
Jaisukh Patel, promoter of Ajanta Group that makes the Oreva brand of electric bikes felt that the move would definitely push the demand for e-bikes. He, however, felt that the long term move should be towards indigenous manufacturing of electric batteries. Currently, no battery manufacturer delves into this segment as the volumes are low. Industry insiders noted that once volumes touch around 300,000 units a year, investment in specialised technology to make electric batteries becomes viable for battery manufacturers.

Steps like these would be more of a necessity rather than perks in near future given the ever increasing petrol prices ... I hope a lot more R & D goes into electric bikes, making them more powerful and fun to ride .... for instance our very own xBhp member hemank has already taken first step towards it (PS: Home made Electric Sport bike)

I did toy with the idea of purchasing a e-bike. The thought recharging the bike gives me headache as I live in 6th floor, and I don't fancy pulling down a long electric wire every day. Btw I don't think buildings are equipped with secured electrical sockets on the ground floor for e-bike owners, and considering Mumbai where high rise buildings are common, it'll definitely be an issue.

I think there's a provision to remove the battery and charging it, correct me if am wrong. So you can just take the battery to your house, plug it in and charge.

There is someone in Pune by the name of Miracle5, Bhushan Shah is his name. He has developed a bike similar in looks to the first gen pulsar. The bike has a top speed of 80 kmph, and can give a range of upto 80 kms if driven at 55-60 kmph, lesser if you run at a higher speed.

Give me something that will do 80-90kmph, have a range of say 80 kms, charging time 4 hours for a 80% charge, 8 for a full charge, and the battery pack should last atleast 30,000 kms. Package and price it at 60-70k ( if you can get govt subsidy, better ), and i am sold!!!

My offerings to the gods of speed -

              - KTM Duke 200
              - Yamaha RXZ 5 speed

Still, don't you think battery would be quiet heavy. Never seen the batteries myself, but considering they are around 24v, that seems heavy stuff. Car batteries at 12v are pretty heavy.

Thats just not possible bro.........atleast at this stage. There are a few options though from Zero and another electric bike maker whose name i dont remember however it begins from B. It does 160 km/hr but the range is around 100kms. I think the Finance Minsiter should reconsider his strategy.

I happen to like good engine roar. So maybe in the future these electric vehicles would come with Exhaust Sound System (ESS ). Just set the desired sound electronically and vrooom. Imagine a tinny E bike with the sound of Harley. Cool! .

Anyway, I wonder how those E bikes that does some 20/25 kmph top perform with two medium size adults on it . . . say on an incline.

Looks like you are out of touch with the pace of technology.. just take a look at this.

Electric car runs over 1,000 km without recharge, shatters previous record

Awesome to see Hamank's creation, i agree with you, if even 25 percent of the R&D investment that goes in development of fossil fueled vehicles be channeled to E-bike development, they certainly would evolve with leaps and bounds in technology, total cost of the product, and cost of batteries etc. My only argument on the the EV concept is the disposal of used batteries, and the lack of infrastructure to make them a practical option to the 100-125cc brigade.

I gun the throttle, the motorbike wails, the forks heave up, the revs climb, my view blurs, air gushes in my lid, muscles tighten, street lights streak. Just another day at work...
