  • Bajaj Auto confident of maintaining 20% margin

Below is a verbatim transcript of Rajiv Bajaj's interview with CNBC-TV18's Udayan Mukherjee and Mitali Mukherjee.

Q: There is criticism that the sales numbers seem to reflect what is happening with the dealer level and there is stocking up. There is not much of retail appetite that is actually veined right now. How would you respond to that criticism?

A: It may be different for different companies. For Bajaj Auto our billing has lacked retail both in January, when we did 195 thousand motorcycles in the domestic market, and also, in February where we have done about 205 thousand. So, we have reduced some stock and it has been consistent on our part especially with motorcycles.

We have a new motorcycle to introduce in April and have been making space for that. The demand for three-wheelers is robust and we would like to make more. We are pleased that in a relatively short month, we could put out 40,000 three-wheelers, yet the demand is still ahead of that. Hence, in our case there is no increase in dealer stock either in January or February.

Q: How much do you think bike sales will then get upto on a monthly rate, if you are going at 2.86 this month?

A: We can reach to Rs 300 thousand mark in March, specifically this will be assisted by the festival of Gudi Padwa in early April. It is our biggest market day, we retail about bikes a month in Maharashtra. So, aided by that we hope to reach the Rs 300 thousand mark. April to June seems to be a good quarter because again aided by the season in the North and the associated festivities; we are hopeful that motorcycle sales will be upto Rs 325- Rs 340 thousand for that quarter.

Q: If you do hit Rs 3 lakhs next month, in terms of two-wheelers, what would be a rough break-up of that?

A: Almost 70% continue to be Pulsar and Discover. The Pulsar is powered by about Rs 80-85,000 a month; and Discover is about Rs 125,000 a month and the balance is equally split between Platina in this market and the Boxer in the overseas market. Hence, 70% is what we would like to call the bigger and sportier motorcycles that help us maintain the 20% EBITDA, even for this quarter as we have done through the year.

      Here's more :-

Q: The commodity CRB index has gone up 15% since December. Are you still confident of holding to your 20% margin profile given what is going on in the commodity world?

A: Absolutely, because in our case, with EBITDA being 20% our cost is 80% of sales, of which materials about 72% and rest is 8%. Other cost such as wages, electricity fuel, interest costs, none of that is relevant to Bajaj Auto because all of that put together is only 8% of cost.
The commodity cost is very misleading, because the reason for our outstanding EBITDA is one that our cost of sale is less than 3%, whereas most auto companies is around 10%. So, if they cut by a little on advertising, they would make up a few rupees on the commodity front.

Q: Any preemptive price increases that you all had introduced, expecting to see an excise duty rollback?

A: We did this in January, more from the point of view of anticipated increase in commodities. So, except for one particular product, the Discover 100, we did see the price increase absorbing the anticipated commodity increase. It is the testimony of the pricing power of our brand that we have been able to pull off the price increase of 1% to 1.5% and yet keep the growth going.

We have 20% growth between January and February both on motorcycles and three-wheelers and also, on the exports. Hence, we made that price increase and it is going to ensure that we stay in the 20% plus space, as far as our EBITDA is concerned for the fourth quarter.

If it is indeed Discover 125, it makes me wonder as to how much of a success will this bike earn. However, one good thing is that even if 125 doesn't set charts on fire, it won't be bashed because it will remain under the umbrella of Discover brand. This way, the new bike will get time to settle down in the market rather than taking brickbats from the day one like XCD.

Just as I thought!! this will bring good numbers into Discover brand!! and it is needed for Bajaj to directly counter Shine/super splendor/glamour/sling shot.. so many conservative models out there with no direct competition from Bajaj.. there are people whom I knew were hell bent on buying 125cc.. and so many times I have seen them go to Shine.. coz, at one point of time there was no option in 125 cc segment.
