  • Ducati Unveils Special Pikes Peak Bike

    March 9, 2011, 2:45 PM ET

    By Jonathan Welsh

Motorcycle maker Ducati unveiled a special edition of its Multistrada 1200 S called the Pikes Peak Special Edition. The new bike is aimed at marking Ducati team rider Greg Tracy’s win at the 2010 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado.

Special model is painted in Ducati’s red and white racing-team livery and has special pin-striping, red seat stitching and carbon-fiber parts to set it apart from the garden-variety Multistrada. The new model’s focus on such an all-American racing event reflects the importance of the U.S. market to the Italian bike builder.

The Multistrada is designed to perform well in conditions ranging from the race track to rugged off-road jaunts. It has four riding modes; sport, touring, urban and enduro, which the rider selects electronically to tailor the bike’s power and handling characteristics to the terrain. The company says those features helped it compete effectively in the difficult race.

Ducati says it will again enter the Pikes Peak competition this year and will sick with last-year’s team of Tracy and third-place finisher Alexander Smith.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, often called the race to the clouds, takes place in the Rockies about 10 miles west of Colorado Springs. The 12.42-mile course begins at an altitude of 9,390 feet and ends at 14,110 feet. Road surfaces range from asphalt to gravel to dirt, and thin air robs engines of some of the power they generate at sea level. Cars usually get most of the attention and compete for the overall course record. But the climb includes categories for motorcycles with engines from 250cc to 1200cc.

The special Pikes Peak Ducati is a 2012 model and will be available starting in June. Each bike will come with a numbered badge on the engine crankcase cover. Price: $21,995 only.
