  • TVS plans India's cheapest motorcycle !

    Sharmistha Mukherjee | 2011-03-17 01:51:00

The countrys third largest two-wheeler manufacturer, TVS Motors, is mulling a low-priced motorcycle to shore up volumes in the Indian market. The product, when introduced, would be the cheapest motorcycle in the country.

TVS Motors, which currently manufactures mopeds, scooters and motorcycles for the domestic market, is considering a new product to bridge the price gap between the company's range of mopeds and motorcycles.

"There is room for introducing one more product at the lower end of the motorcycle segment. Our cheapest motorcycle comes for Rs 36,000 while the most expensive moped is tagged Rs 25,000. There might be a new product positioned in this range" said H S Goindi, president (marketing).

He, however, admitted it would be a challenge to make a profitable product in the segment at such aggressive price points. "The Indian market is demanding, the quality of motorcycles on offer here is very high in terms of finish, engine performance, styling and fuel efficiency. The challenge would be to offer good features at competitive price points" he said.

Industry experts note the 100-110cc segment account for 60 per cent of the nine million motorcycles sold every year and is the mainstay of companies like Hero Honda and TVS Motors. To launch inexpensive products in the category is, therefore, critical for two-wheeler companies in the country.

Honda Motor Corporation (HMC), which too is working on a low-cost bike priced at around $ 600 for sale in emerging economies, has decided against introducing the product in the Indian market. Shinji Aoyama, president and chief executive officer, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) had earlier said, "The low-cost bike is not suited for the current requirements in the market here. At present, we are not considering launching the product in India."

The motorcycle is being developed at the companys research and development centre in China, mainly for markets in Africa. TVS Motors, at present, is working on developing two new motorcycles which are likely to hit the Indian roads in the course of 2011-12. Goindi informed, "We are working on two products. It would take us another eight to nine months to launch these motorcycles commercially in the market." He, however, declined to share details about the segments which the products would be launched in.

Additionally, the company is also firming plans to re-launch products in the electric scooters segment. TVS Motors has developed an electric variant of Scooty Teenz and a new scooter, which are being tested in 50 towns across the country. Depending on the feedback received a commercial launch would be made in the coming financial year.

TVS Motors, which is the third largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country, has sold 1.6 million units in the domestic market between April and February this financial year, registering a growth of 31 per cent as compared to the corresponding period the previous year.

Last time there was a news of a TVS Cruiser, and the RTR Was born... then came a news of the bigger RTR and the Jive was born. Now a cheap 100cc bike, so do we expect a pricey quarter litre?

PS: HH already announced a cheap low cost vehicle, so did Bajaj sometime back, and now TVS... Baah! Indians dont buy cheap stuff. Its a misconception. Indians buy feature rich VFM products. No wonder MicroMax mobile is doing good, despite Nokia having the biggest brand recall in India. MicroMax enjoys the highest CSAT!

I love your posts man! In this post, I like the first 2 lines.

It is possible for TVS to do this. Nothing very special.

Is the new scooter Scooty Hybrid? I mean, electric and battery both!
Or could it be a Step Thru?

This time Apache 250RTR will be born

And i've used Micromax phone (had bought one), and trust me Micromax is no where near VFM. You will find it less in your pocket and more at the SVC.

What's the difference between Electric and Battery :O

            Electric = Plug and ride?

            Battery = Duracell AA/AAA?

lol Thanks Samarth But yeah with TVS you never know whats up thier sleeve. With the recent ABS launch I guess a bigger bike makes more sense, as then they can say "Look the 180 has the bigger bike technology like the RTR-XXX or the CBR250"

I means so much better than saying, look we launched the 180 with ABS as a premium offering in 2011 and now laucnhing a 100cc worlds cheapest byk, err bike! It would be such a waste of natural resources.

Could be poor product, but then look at how its playing mind games with the consumers!

I agree with Satyen about the "low price" thing

There have always been many models which have been priced lower than the Hero Honda Splendor.

Current Eg: Hero Honda CD Dawn, CD Deluxe
                Bajaj Platina
                TVS Sport, Max 4R
                Yamaha Crux

But even then the Splendor continues to be India's (and world's) largest selling model since the last 9 years..!!

Even Bajaj tasted success when it made the Discover 100 available at a price which was at par with the Splendor (and not cheaper than the Splendor).

Even my wife has said a comprehensive NO to the Tata Nano (without even seeing it in the flesh) just because it was the "cheapest" car.

TVS needs to be careful with the "cheapest" tag as it is something which can work against the product.

Agreed Tatas Nano doesnt have tat feel...

When Nano was introduced at the Auto Expo in 2008, it immediately became the star of India sparking debates about the increased congestion in the roads across India....ppl said it will b used instead f autos etc...
infact many said will kill d bike business.(tat can never happen)

hmmmm it was more of a fundamentally weak car...it always create the doubt in consumers mind..a few nanos caught fire..and a "cheap"image..

I feel it doesnt have anything going in its favour than the price tag!!

anyways TVS tyres r under critisism..wr else will the dilute the quality..

Hope we see the RTR 250 soon....and its worth the wait...

regarding the cheapest bike...do give some USP(except the cheapest tag) which can take it past Hero Honda....

Sorry, it was a typo. I meant, engine and battery both.

They showed something like that in Auto Expo, and it saved 30% fuel costs due to this. Again, I have no idea how much the batteries will cost.
