  • Hero, Bajaj compete for premium segment biz

    30 Mar, 2011, 04.17AM IST, Lijee Philip & Chanchal Pal Chauhan,ET Bureau

MUMBAI | NEW DELHI: Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto, the two largest motorcycle manufacturers in India, are getting embroiled in a battle for the fast-growing premium two-wheeler business. The BM Munjal group company wants to step up efforts to counter falling market share in the premium segment.

With Bajaj Auto focusing on strengthening its hold over the segment, Hero Honda- the country's largest two-wheeler maker-is left with no option but to follow suit and step up strategic initiatives to catch a bigger pie of the premium market. According to data from apex industry body, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Hero Honda has steadily lost its overall market share to 54% in Apr-Feb FY11 from 59% in FY10 and 75% in FY09. Its share of the premium segment has fallen to 13% in Apr-Feb of FY11 from 29% in FY10 and 34% in FY09. In the mid segment, its share has declined to 71% in Apr-Feb FY11 from 75% in FY10.

"The premium segment is the most profitable segment, as a good product will give the manufacturer better margins," said Mahantesh Sabarad, analyst with Fortune Financials. The profitability ratio between Bajaj Auto's entry-level bike Platina and premium Pulsar is around 1:8, he said. "Two-wheeler players want to be seen as top-end player too as it helps improve their image and margins," said Abdul Majeed, auto expert with PwC.

To tap the premium segment, Hero Honda is setting up special dealer zones for different two-wheeler categories, offering premium facilities for mass market bikes, revamping research and development, creating different marketing verticals, and starting a used-motorcycles business for the first time in the history of Indian two-wheeler market.

The company has increased advertising spend for its premium bikes like Karizma ZMR and repositioned some of the mid-segment bikes such as Splendor Pro and Passion Pro with additional premium features. The company is also offering some of its premium two-wheeler features - such as electric start (instead of a kick start), mag wheels (instead of spoke wheels), and better aesthetics - even in the mid-segment bikes to lure customers.

But the Core design and component assembly blue print is still from honda. So i think it will still hold. But the Brand name loss will have an impact on sales. so its 50 50 as of now. who knows Karizma might emerge as a seperate brand or even splendor .. jus like Rajiv wanted to seperate pulsars from bajaj. If they do that,, there will be some hope imho.

I would love to hear Hunk rather than Hero Hunk
HH should go the Bajaj way of making bikes a separate brand

BTW I liked to Listen Hero Honda Hunk but now times have changed
I feel like Peter Parker when I drive my Hunk in the city but I become Spiderman when I am on my CBR swinging from one lane to the other on expressways.

2009 & Present: HH Hunk Limited Edition [Red Striker]
2011 & Present: Honda CBR 250R [Black Blade]

That is not exactly clear as of now.. Logically Honda should charge Royalty if the engine design/blue print is not changed.

Its bit amusing actually.. for when Mr. Bajaj had spoken about this "Discover/Pulsar without Bajaj" strategy about a year back, most had commented that it did not make any sense.

Today morning, I saw a splendor where in the owner had got rid of all the stickers on the bike including Honda etc, guess what he had on the bike's tank instead of Hero Honda, I couldnt believe it..

                Well, actually it is!!

As per the topic.. I don't think Hero is in a sweet spot, this split couldn't have come at a worst time as far as Hero is concerned.. they are only finding their feet in premium segment with Hunk/CBZ & Karizma.. and the split comes into the picture to spoil the party. I'm not very optimistic on Hero's future in premium segment, unless they come up with something radically different.

Although its still not clear if Hero can use the same/current engines on the bikes post 2014 without paying any royalty to Honda, it's been reported that Hero can't use the "CB" and "CD" brand name as it belongs to Honda.

So the Hunk and Karizma brand names would stay with Hero but the CBZ Xtreme will have to find a new name (possibly just get re branded as "Xtreme") after 2014 or before.

(Read this: "Apart from the CB and CD brands which are owned by Honda, the rest of the product "pet names" are owned by Hero.")

Logicallly speaking, post-2014 Hero will still have to pay royalty on existing bikes that use Honda technology.

Are you sure about the CBZ thing? Will it have to be replaced because Honda owns CB? I'm a bit skeptical. But, if true, its a blow to Hero as CBZ is a well-entrenched non-commuter brand of theirs.

I don't see Hero launching more than one premium bike (most likely an upgraded ZMA to fall between P220 and CBR250). Till 2014, it would like to revamp the technology in its bread-butter models. That would give them time to continue with stickering upgrades till they develop some technological capabilities .
