  • Year after ban, two-wheelers continue to ply on JJ Flyover

Megha Sood | Posted: Apr 09, 2011 at 0241 hrs IST

Mumbai More than a year after the ban on two-wheelers on the JJ Flyover, the traffic police have not been able to implement it completely as motorcyclists continue to travel on the stretch. The traffic police, however, blame the two-wheeler riders for flouting the law and said they will continue the ban because of its success in bringing down accidents on the stretch tremendously.

On April 1, 2010, the traffic police had imposed the ban after they observed that across the city the JJ Flyover topped in fatal accidents of two-wheeler riders. They had claimed that two-wheelers often drive at high speed and are prone to accidents at the three sharp curves along the flyover. According to the police statistics in the past five years, of the 2,474 accidents across the city, 335 involved two-wheelers killing more than 71 people, including the riders. On JJ Flyover alone, 31 people have been killed and 66 injured in the past five years with 90 per cent of these being two-wheeler riders. However, in the past year the police have penalised more than 2,000 two-wheelers for travelling on the flyover. Officers claim motorcycle riders continue to use the flyover despite their presence. One person has been handicapped and the other is in coma.

They can always put a few breakers before the sharp bends to slow down people instead of putting a ban

The two-wheeler ban on the JJ flyover is moronic.

It's obvious that fatalities will decrease if banned.
So it can't be called a "good move".

There are more than thrice as many fatalities on PalmBeach Road & the Western Express highway...
what's the solution here? ban two-wheelers here too?

Speed bumps / Rumble strips / Cats-Eyes / Cameras / Speed guns / Traffic cops...

              those are actual solutions.

              .

Its really sad that due to recklessness of few riders the whole community has to suffer ... If the prescribed speed limits are followed such mishaps could be avoided !

                  Its stupidity to ban

I have driven twice over JJ Bridge and I agree it has quite sharp turns but there is always an alternate solution!

Using that bridge saves a lot of time, we can easily skip 3-4 signals and the awful traffic
