Mumbai More than a year after the ban on two-wheelers on the JJ Flyover, the traffic police have not been able to implement it completely as motorcyclists continue to travel on the stretch. The traffic police, however, blame the two-wheeler riders for flouting the law and said they will continue the ban because of its success in bringing down accidents on the stretch tremendously.
On April 1, 2010, the traffic police had imposed the ban after they observed that across the city the JJ Flyover topped in fatal accidents of two-wheeler riders. They had claimed that two-wheelers often drive at high speed and are prone to accidents at the three sharp curves along the flyover. According to the police statistics in the past five years, of the 2,474 accidents across the city, 335 involved two-wheelers killing more than 71 people, including the riders. On JJ Flyover alone, 31 people have been killed and 66 injured in the past five years with 90 per cent of these being two-wheeler riders. However, in the past year the police have penalised more than 2,000 two-wheelers for travelling on the flyover. Officers claim motorcycle riders continue to use the flyover despite their presence. One person has been handicapped and the other is in coma.
