  • S&T Motors weighs options of launching 250 cc motorcycles

Ronojoy Banerjee | Posted: Thursday, Apr 21, 2011 at 0239 hrs IST

New Delhi: Global super bike maker S&T Motors, which acquired Korean-Hyosung Motors in 2007, is shifting focus to emerging markets like India. President of S&T Motor Corp Taekwon Kim, who was in the Capital on Wednesday to unveil its new motorcycles 650-cc sports bike GT650R and 700-cc cruiser motorcycle ST7, told FE that the company is weighing options to introduce lower engine capacity bikes in the range of 250 cc with an aim to increase the ovreall volumes.

“It is critical for us to create a base and foundation. Without it, no growth is possible. We have plans to introduce lower engine capacity bikes as well. Globally we have a full range of motorcycles and scooters,” Kim said. He added that in the next 3-5 years, the company would address the 250cc-400cc motorcycles segment. “This is the segment where the most of the motorcycle market is shifting towards,” he said. This is the second entry of Hyosung in India. S&T Corp had earlier acquired Hyosung Motors in 2007. In 2010, the company entered into a technical tie-up with Pune-based Garware Motors to introduce its range of bikes for the Indian market. “We have entered into a partnership in India and there are various options that we are exploring,” Kim said. In 2010, S&T Corp sold around 22,000 units globally. The key markets for S&T include the US and South America (13,000 units) and Europe & Australia (6,000-7,000 units).

Interestingly, S&T Corp also has products that are in the sub-100cc range. Kim said that the company sells 50cc scooters in parts of Korea. “We have a wide range of products that we have in our portfolio,” he said. Kim, however, ruled out any plans to introduce its range of low-cost products in India. On Wednesday, S&T Corp in a technical tie up with Garware Motors launched 650-cc sports bike GT650R (Rs 4.75 lakh) and 700-cc cruiser motorcycle ST7 (Rs 5.69 lakh) which would be available in five cities.

WTH ..wrong with these guys .. who will wait till 3-5 years .. by that time .. who know wt will be the market situation .... they did mistake launching 250CC when in india every one was even thinking twice to get there 100CC bikes ... and now india graduated to 250CC and once again they are making mistake by launching 650CC first instead of 250CC

I think their strategy is quite smart. If they would have launched their 250, it probably would've been caught in the no-man's land between the superb VFM Honda CBR250 & the potent but pricey (dont shoot me, just my opinion) Kawasaki Ninja 250. By getting into the 600+ cc market they will enjoy the first mover advantage & will be able to attract the audience for whom the 250 is too small a leap from their current rides & the litre class bikes are too powerful and / or expensive. I feel that 600s & 800s are way more usable in our conditions than a litre class bikes.

I've always felt so too (more about the 600's than the 800's). But everytime i hop on to my puny 250 i feel its more than enough for our roads and traffic conditions.

Bingo!! You stole words from my heart. Yes, Hysosung will get the 1st Mover Advantage, and will also help build the Brand image.

Got a call again from Garware today in response to my online enquiry (this was the third call in the last month for one enquiry I placed 2 months ago ont he website)... I told them I am looking at the Diwali season to book my bike on that he said I will have 2 more models to choose from... He let slip the gt250r... Then when I questioned him more about that he said "sir I am not aware of which models but there are gonna be 2 more models"... I think it is more like 3-5 months and not years as mentioned in the OP...
