  • Hero Honda hires Law & Kenneth to create brand identity; stock down

    29 Apr, 2011, 10.00AM IST,ET Bureau

NEW DELHI: Hero Honda has hired UK creative agency Law & Kenneth to create a brand identity after parting ways with 27-year-old partner Honda Motor. At 10 am, shares of Hero Honda Motors were trading 1.70 per cent down at Rs 1667.25 on the Bombay Stock Exchange.

"We have taken Law & Kenneth on board as our creative partner at this early stage for complete alignment and focus in creating the new brand and its communication," Hero Honda MD & CEO Pawan Munjal told ET.

Law & Kenneth bagged the Rs 100-crore account of the world's largest two-wheeler company by volume, beating Percept/H, JWT, DraftfcbUlka and Mudra in a creative pitch. It will join London-based design agency Wolff Olins to create a positioning for the Munjal family-owned brand, complete with name and logo.

"Strategically, we would like to communicate our new brand identity in complete harmony with our new brand vision," Munjal said.

Hero Group plans to turn into a global automotive player and enter three-wheelers and passenger car segments. Before that, it will ship bikes and scooters to Latin America, Africa, Middle East and South East Asia. Wolff Olins, which created top mobile service provider Airtel's new brand image, is already working on Hero's brand identity. Law & Kenneth has been working with the company in an informal capacity, a person close to the development said.

Hero's new logo and name, without 'Honda', will likely be unveiled in a few months, the person said. "It will be a new brand that has to be built in the shortest possible timeframe." In the recent past, different creative agencies have done different corporate campaigns for the company.

Its latest brand campaign the "Dhak Dhak Go" was done by Draft FCB Ulka, while the iconic "Desh ki Dhadkan" campaign was done by Percept.

Even in the case of brands, separate creative agencies handle different brands of Hero Honda. While Percept manages the Passion brand, JWT does all the creative campaigns of Karizma and ZMR. Draft FCB Ulka did the campaign for Hero Honda's scooter brand,Pleasure.

No wonder, I liked the Desh Ki Dhadkan and the newer Passion ads. While the ZMR and Dhak Dhak Go ads were downright repulsive. It does not really make sense to give different brands to different agencies. The difference becomes clearly visible and sends out conflicting messages.
