Now 'Made in India' gearboxes for BMW superbikes - 1 - *Autos - MSN India

New Delhi: Signalling the coming of age of Indian auto component makers, Hero Motors has bagged a contract to become the sole international supplier of gearboxes for BMW's motorcycles for both domestic and global markets. Gearboxes are one of the most critical parts in an automobile and involve high-end engineering.
Hero Motors is part of the $4.5-billion Hero Group.
Pankaj Munjal, managing director, Hero Motors, said, "We have developed the gearbox ourselves. Usually, components such as engines and transmissions are made by the company itself, as they involve advanced technology. We have achieved the expertise. BMW Motorrad will source gearboxes from us for products it sells globally." The agreement would be for five-eight years depending on the transmissions sourced for different products by BMW Motorrad.
The deal was closed on Tuesday. "That Europe is the best place for sourcing automobile components is not necessarily correct. The landscape is changing. Our transmission business, for one, has been growing over 70 per cent a year for the last few years", said Munjal.

So, Hero will make gearboxes for BMW, despite having no R&D all these years, and licensing engines from Honda? How can they? And why would BMW trust Hero on this for 5-8 years?

This news is totally confusing me!

Hasn't hero motos being making gearboxes for Harley for like ages now?
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

They make parts for not only bike OEMs but numerous car makers also...and they have been doing it for ages now. Unkown supplies include steering knuckles, varous pins, they also supply transmissions for ATVs and motorcycles to Rotax also. Bosch, Toyota, Dellorto, BMW ..all source from them.

So BMW awarding then their gear set building just show the trust a big OEM like BMW can put in them. Kudos Hero

Thats amazing news... But what I do not understand is that if they can make the gearboxes here which are one of the most critical parts... Why can they not set up a mother plant here...?

Also will the BMW bikes get any cheaper since the gearboxes are made here?
