NAGPUR: A fifth standard pass, city mechanic Jayant Manik has developed an eco-friendly battery-operated automatic bike with support from the Marathi Vigyan Parishad (MVP) after a year or more of work. The inventors are calling it an 'automatic battery-operated bike'. However, they claim that unlike other battery-operated vehicles, this battery does not need recharging at all. This saves a lot of fuel, they say.
Speaking to TOI, former MVP president, Prof Ashok Bhad who has been supporting the project financially and academically, said that though the bike was a mere model, the battery could also be used for small four wheelers like the Nano car. "We have basically developed the battery for the Karizma model of Hero Honda. We can demonstrate it on any bike. We have got an offer from one company but we are keeping our options open for any company offering to buy the technology," he said. The vehicle's battery can be modified according to the company's needs, he added. Since the vehicle using the battery will not require any fuel tank, the petrol tank can be suitably done away with. This will make the vehicle lighter.
It's an eco-friendly bike that will save lot of money for the owner. "Like every liquid lead battery, this battery will also have a fixed life and will require replacement but the cost will be many times lesser than the petrol cost," claimed Manik who has been repairing vehicles for 15 years.
He added that the battery does not discharge at all. "I have combined mechanical and chemical processes to modify the battery with the help and also used some alternators. But I can't disclose the details now as I am still awaiting a patent on it."
Nandkishore Nanoti, a chemistry teacher who teaches the subject at some tuition classes has helped in making chemical modifications in the battery. Rajesh Shrivastava, environment consultant, Pollution and Ecology Control Services, too has helped.
The inventors claim that the bike can run non stop for 500-100 km and can also be used as an inverter or a generator to burn 10-15 halogens. "We have shown the vehicle to the director of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (Neeri). The institute said that it had no role to play as the vehicle was already eco-friendly," said Bhad.
