Ducati aims to sell more than 200 motorcycles in India this year, Mirko Bordiga, chief executive for Asia Pacific at the company, said on the sidelines of the inauguration of a showroom. It sold 100 motorcycles in 2010.
"We see high demand in the Indian market," Mr. Bordiga said. "With new motorcycle makers entering India, the market is bound to grow."
Ducati is among several global two-wheeler makers including Harley-Davidson Inc., Suzuki Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co., Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. and Yamaha Motor Co. which have introduced premium motorcycles in India to gain from rapidly growing demand. Expanding auto markets of India and China also help these auto makers to partly offset declining sales in their traditional strongholds of Europe and the U.S.
Harley and South Korea's S&T Motors Co. have also set up factories to assemble premium motorcycles in India as the federal government levies lower tax on locally made vehicles.
Mr. Bordiga said that Ducati, however, had no immediate plan to assemble its motorcycles in India.
Ducati began India sales in 2008 and offers its entire range of 15 high-performance motorcycles such as the Superbike 1098R and Hypermotard 1100S models.
