  • MRF declares lockout at Kottayam plant

    PTI | Jun 22, 2011, 03.33pm IST

    CHENNAI:
Leading tyre manufacturer MRF today declared a lock out at their Kottayam plant following labour unrest.

In a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, MRF said it had declared the lock out with effect from 5 am today on account of labour unrest. While union sources said the lockout at the plant in Vadathoor was a fallout of a dispute between an employee and a supervisor over alleged unauthorised leave, company officials when contacted by PTI declined to comment on it.

The employee was not allowed to join duty on Saturday and supporting him other workers staged a 'walkout', a union office-bearer told PTI over phone on condition of anonymity. The plant had not been operating for the last four days and the loss was estimated about Rs 22 crore, he said. The Kottayam plant employs about 1,350 personnel in all three shifts and manufactures tyres, tubes, he added.

MRF Tyres has seven manufacturing facilities in South India. It exports tyres and conveyor belts to over 65 nations, including US, Europe, Middle East, Japan.

Unruly unions and unreasonable labor is a serious concern for Indian manufacturers. I won't be surprised if the rising costs, delays, disruptions forces them to look towards China, Mexico and Brazil for manufacturing.

There is a need to have a worker's rights governing body but this has to be instituted by a central agency under HRD and not by independent and discrete labor unions. The end result is economic fallout that affects everyone. Where do you think MRF will attempt to recover this multi-crore loss to be in the black again? Quality and Innovation will suffer...and costs will rise.

There could be fault on management as well, we can't make sweeping statements saying only workers are responsible. In Coimbatore, Pricol employees lynched their HRD manager in a gruesome manner, but we need to think what made them to go to that extent. In many cases of strikes, management has also has it's share of mistake/s, not just employees.

Yeah management is also at fault but remember whenever a company get locked out the worst affected people are the employees and their families.

I know this because many of the companies in Mumbai were locked out due to union issues with the management. Companies always have an opportunity to shift to a different location where they can hire different labour.

BTW why doesn't any IT company employees go on strike....we guys also need to make some union . We are the most exploited people in this country .

Guys, I agree that the management may have its own share of flaws or wrong decisions.
One can't always blame the workers. Anyways, there's an update:

Tyre-maker MRF announces that Kottayam plant lockdown ends

Indian tyre-maker MRF has announced that the lock-out at its plant in Kottayam, Kerala has been lifted effective from Friday morning. It can be recalled that on Wednesday, the firm had declared a lock-out in the unit due to labour unrest causing its shares to fall more than 5 percent.
The reports mentioned that the Chennai-based tyremaker MRF had announced the lockout at its Kottayam plant in Kerala due to labour problem. The reports had quoted union officials as saying that the plant wasn't functioning for the last four days. It was reported that the Kottayam plant has a capacity of 150 metric tonnes a day. This facility employs around 3,000 employees, of which 1,350 are permanent employees, 600 are casual workers while the rest work on contract basis. It was also reported that the labour issues started when the management suspended three permanent employees and one casual worker at the plant.

Anyway cant take sides till we know the whole problem, but Kerala's trade unions in general have a notorious reputation for putting a stop on industrial growth. So welcome to "Trade unions own country"
