India finally gets to drag race - Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India officially introduces Drag Racing in the country

Racing enthusiasts will be excited to learn that Federation of Motor Sports Clubs in India has introduced Drag Racing for the first time in India. Drag racing, in simpler terms means, driving your car or riding your bike from point A to B wherein the fastest driver/rider to reach finish the job, wins the race. Drag racing is said to be both simple yet exhilarating and is capable of testing the driver to maximum limits.
Drag Racing is very famous in US and Europe. It is now being introduced to India under the guidance of Federation of Motor Sports of India through organizers namely Spitfire Motorsports and Speedway Motorsports. Mr. Vicky Chandok, President of FMSCI said that this is the first time such championships have been organized officially in India, though unofficially, such races have been already taking part across the country.
The first official drag racing in India will feature a 400 meter strip along which two cars or two bikes will race alongside. A record is maintained of speed and reaction time of each driver. The race is scheduled at Hyderabad for the coming weekend. Coimbatore and Bangalore will also have a chance during the coming months to witness the event.

So finally, bikers can openly say that they have participated in a legal drag race and they have the experience. It's a great news, but with this new challenges might be uncovered. The first challenge being the space required, which is easier to find in some cities than others. The second being the framing of the rules.
But this is anyways a great news, and bikers can add to their experience while enjoying the race relatively safer than earlier, physically as well as legally.

Motorcycling itself is inherently dangerous hobby. Aren't you still doing it?

Any kind of motorsports is dangerous. FMSCI sanctioning official drag racing would be the best thing to happen to drag racing. At least sufficient safety arrangements would be mandatory. Just check out their regulations -

Better than drag racing on public roads.

BTW, I am not a drag racer / have never participated in one / have never seen one.

@satyamzma on a closed track, and a moderately souped up vehicle. Yes.

When you start pushing the limits is when it gets risky.

I think this is a great idea... but should it be 402 meters or something ( quarter mile ). And the drag strip should be around 1.6-2kms in length ( For longer drags of 1km or more ).

Great news. But this is again for teams and is an official championship, rather than for individuals

^^ Yeah but im sure they wont mind renting the track out to individuals or events.. Cant build a track for lakhs and crores, and keep it for 2-3 main events only.

This is nice.. A good test area to check your vehicle top speed, acceleration etc!!

On closed straight circuits, its generally safe. But these kinds of accidents can usually happen:

                        1. You accelerate very hard (for example, on your modified 600 RR) but your tyres aren't warm enough and can't keep up, they lose grip and you burnout-slide and crash.

                        2. You reach very high speeds on a performance-modified bike, but your chassis/ wheelbase isn't suited to that. Causes instability, you flick left and right (front wheel concussion) and ultimately crash.

Anyone dreaming to touch high speeds should get their wheelbase enlarged first preferably through a longer swingarm, as a longer swingarm tries to avoid wheelies too.

                        3. Engine failure/ blow up. Or maybe Technical fault. Fire may ensue.

                        4. Failure to maintain straight line, lack of rider talent, bumpy track/ track irregularities, etc.

Otherwise, its generally safe as the bike doesn't corner or lean as much.

Had gone to see those drag races a couple of weeks back, it was kind of boring
There were very long gaps between two drag races, two vehicles of the same capacity were not participating together... may be some kind of safety concerns...
One really sad thing was, the people who were coming to race here and the viewers were showing off by performing stunts on the road parallel to the race track, it could have been very dangerous.
People were jumping on the barricades and one of them fell down inwards on the race track, i was really happy that a race was not on during that time, otherwise, the outcome would have been deadly.

Just posting my experience after viewing a drag race... no offence intended.

I may be mistaken, but i remember a petrol head cousin of mine (being a drag fanboy) attending a Drag event hosted by SPEED in Coimbatore last year, on his modded Baleno. Dont we have such clubs in India already? Can anyone shed light here?

I understand, man. It's difficult to expect maturity from this country's posers. Which bikes were racing, can you tell us? Any more details?

                              Also, some more details are:

Getting back to the topic, the 2011 FMSCI Drag Racing Championship will be organised by Spitfire Motorsports in collaboration with Speedway Motors.

The entries are limited to 200 per championship weekend. (I wonder if it means entries are open for all people with racing licenses?)

For more details, visit Speedway Motorsports,India. Here are the proposed dates for the event:

                              August 13 & 14 - Hyderabad
                              September 24 & 25 - Coimbatore
                              October 15 & 16 - Bengaluru / Hyderabad
                              November 19 & 20 - Coimbatore
                              December 17 & 18 - Hyderabad

Is your city here guys? And are you planning to visit the event?
