    Bajaj may Hike Motorcycle Prices.

Citing rising raw material costs due to the depreciating rupee, two-wheeler major Bajaj Auto today indicated that it may increase prices of its products.

"Definitely we are seeing a pressure on raw materials, because raw materials are usually corrected to the dollar rate. Some cost increases or price increases may be around the corner," Bajaj Auto President, Motorcycle business, K Srinivas told reporters here.

The company had effected a price increase early this year, mentioning high input costs.

Srinivas said the motorcycle industry is already highly "localised" and that any imports by companies are partly due to cost advantage. "The day cost advantage vanishes, we will stop importing such stuff", he said after unveiling the 125cc Discover ST, a more expensive model than the last one.

Bajaj Auto already has a 125 cc Discover priced at Rs 51,127. The new Discover ST comes at Rs 55,740 (ex-showroom Tamil Nadu) with new features like mono-shock suspension, a first in its category, he said.

Srinivas clarified that the new model was not an upgraded version of the previous model and both these models would be available in outlets simultaneously.

He said the 125cc motorcycle segment witnessed a 38 per cent growth last year and has become "one of the fastest growing" segments.

Last year, the industry grew by 12 per cent, he said, adding that the new Discover 125 ST would become the "flagship" model of the "Discover" range. Bajaj Auto reported 1.23 per cent increase in motorcycle sales in May at 3,21,922 units as against 3,17,989 units sold in the same period of last year.

Exports grew by three per cent in May to 1,30,573 units compared to 1,26,818 units in the same month last year.

Just 23 days after starting to export Home made Dukes to the land of the Rising Sun, this decision is not exactly a good news like the former was. Price hike is not a first time news for us. Every company that comes to your mind right now, has hiked prices sometime or the other.

5 years ago, I purchased my P180 UG3 for Rs. 70,000 exact on road. Today, even P150 costs slightly more than that. 150cc's from other companies are not too better either, with some touching the 80k mark too.

Price hike. Its a reality of our lives, be it fuel, other commodities, food, motorcycles or anything. Other companies are not too better anyways, so its not fair to just blame Bajaj.

Yup, bloody inflation, makes everything costly in our life! Bajaj never shies away from increasing prices. Hero isn't that quick with increasing prices, that's the reason why their margins are really low, they sell twice as much when compared to Bajaj, still they have less profits compared to Bajaj. May be they need to take a relook at their pricing strategy.

if hero doesn't increase prices frequently, its a good thing for us. why to worry about hero's profit margin. we are getting cheaper bikes.thats it. i m happy.

anyway keeping that aside- it has now become a harsh reality that prices will always increase. its too bad .... government should do something. i hate this government.
last tim i checked the price of P150 i was like OMG WTF ...since when it started costing more than 70000 rupees.

i hope this hike is not more that 1000-2000 rupees.

^^ well, Hero's hesitation is only with Splendor/Passion models. 125+ models, I guess are already priced higher than Bajaj! Irony for Hero is that they sell too many Splendor/Passion models, which pulls down their margins.

Will this still happen after yesterday?

          Rupee records 2nd-biggest 10-yr gain

Rupee is back to the Rs.55.xx Vs USD with yesterday's 1.17 Rupee record gain.

Methinks yes it will. Bajaj's last price revision was when USD 1 was still below INR 50. Dollar is still over 10% more expensive than normal levels, so assuming 50% (by cost) of components in Bajaj bikes are imported, atleast a 5% increase in overall price of bikes is mandatory

If this trend continues and rupee goes strong enough to touch 50, bajaj could rethink their strategy, petrol could be back to Rs. 70 in Bangalore and I can finally purchase my Amazon Kindle Touch
Currently without a vehicle. Uber App and Bangalore Metro serving all my travel needs.
