  • Bosch moves into two-wheeler service business, sets up 10 bike service centers

Bosch Automotive today announced the setting up 10 two-wheeler service centres in Coimbatore, known as the Express Bike Service (EBS).

The company, which had opened its first EBS outlet in Delhi, plans to open a minimum of 500 such workshops within the next two years, senior Bosch officials said at the inauguration.

''India's two-wheeler industry is growing at a faster pace. But other than original equipment service centres only roadside mechanics are offering the service,'' S Muralidharan, vice president, automotive aftermarket said, adding that the two-wheeler users are looking for a credible service option beyond the warranty period of the vehicle.

The EBS outlets will focus on general service for two-wheelers. It would not do engine and tyre related work. The EBS would be similar to a franchisee model with Bosch giving EBS outlets spare parts, training and technical training for mechanics. Besides, these outlets have to follow the basic norms set by Bosch.

Bosch automotive aftermarket is responsible for automotive spare parts and accessories, vehicle diagnostics, and service workshop concept like Bosch car service and Bosch diesel service.

The company is headquartered in Bangalore and has manufacturing facilities in Nashik, Naganathapua, Jaipur and Goa as well. Its automotive segment manufactures and trades products as diverse as diesel and gasoline fuel injection systems, automotive aftermarket products, auto electricals, special purpose machines, packaging machines, electric power tools and security systems.

Bosch Limited is the flagship company of the Bosch Group in India.

Already Castrol Bike Service is bleeding (that includes complete servicing), not sure how Bosch could provide USP in business

Three years ago, there was similar setup out of Bangalore, Auto Point or something. Not sure what happened to them. They were saying by end of 2009/beginning 2010 they'll start some franchise in Chennai, its 2012 mid & they're no where to be seen.

Two wheeler market is very sensitive unlike car; let's see how Bosch fares in two-wheeler servicing.

Its a high risk venture for anyone. Most of us after the warranty period would not consider giving the bike for service at the showroom, left alone a 3rd party agency who is as expensive if not higher than the ASC. Its not only a matter of reputation that the ASC have but also the cost factor plays in. Most of the parts are simply replaced rather being repaired.

Considering that majority of the population are commuters in India, if focused on the niche market could end up as it is with Castrol bike zone.

express bike service-- now what is that ? something like a bike servicing in 10 mins or so.... ?

and excluding engine and tyre work means ??? i can understand the tyre part but excluding engine ???

so they will be cleaning air filter, chain setting, brake tightening and wash the bike and bingo.... express bike service.

couldn't get the concept. if they wanna open bike service center they hav to do all the work specially engine part.

and there is cost factor too.

What I try to understand excluding engine means is, except the cylinder replacement or work that involves whole day like mounting/dismounting from the frame might not be undertaken.

They might not refuse smaller works like, engine oil/filter replacement, tappet adjustment, brake adjustment/replacements, decarb, fork & stay assy work, cabling issues. Most of these work involves half to a day's work provided the spares are readily available.

Not that easy to start especially from ground zero; especially when it involves buying spares from several third parties.

I would definitely want to give them a try and hope that they arent too expensive. original equipment service centres arent too great either. A welcome move.

This is a welcome move. Also, a very risky one considering the volatile and sensitive market. ASC sux big time.. they are just after money changing parts where a simple repair work would do.. they scare the less educated customers by telling anything they want and make them pay heavily for minor repair works. This move from Bosch would surely reduce a bit of daylight looting from the ASC. lets see how it works..
