  • Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India at second place after Hero in two wheeler market

Q1 of the current financial year, sees Honda Motorcycle & Scooter filling in second slot after Hero in Indian two-wheeler sales, pushing Bajaj to the third position. Sales reports show that Hondas sales were 3,687 units more than that of Bajaj in the first quarter. However, it should be understood that 58% of Hondas sale come from the scooter segment, while the overall sales of Bajaj are only from motorcycles. Sales stats of sales in the domestic market in the first quarter of Honda were 622,176 units as opposed to Bajaj's 618,489 units. According to YS Guleria, vice president-sales and marketing, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) it's the goal of the company to sell over 27.5 lakh two wheelers in the FY12. Recent motorcycle launches will help propel the company ahead. In the near future, this company would also like to broaden its horizons to include the motorcycle segment. This is so as the sales in the motorcycle segment is will increase from 41% to 49%. A 54% increase in sales has been recorded by Honda, while hero saw an increase of 7%. TVS and Bajaj have suffered marginal losses in their sales.
Taking note on the comparisons made between motorcycles -scooter sales as opposed to motorcycle-motorcycle sales, K. Srinivas of Bajaj said that it wasn't a proper comparison basis, and the company would not take competition lightly and would compete on basis of brand strategy. He also made it kown that the company takes it's full fledged motorcycle firm repuation seriously.

    Topic Approved.

India's love for scooters continue, and the new motorcycle releases are also playing their part. But, Bajaj's major releases, The 200 NS and 125 ST are almost Q2 releases. Same for the 110cc Dream Yuga.

So, its affordable performance vs Plain-jane commuting for the Q2. Only time can tell what will happen... I can't predict anything.

Probably, HMSI is making what the country needs to stay in business or the numbers are twisted as usual

I wonder if being a motorcycle only company will give bajaj any advantages as a brand in a long run. I mean if you have a strong reputation as a brand Bajaj, you should be capable of producing great products, be it bike or scooter or car.

its about focusing on one thing and doing it in a way that nobody else can catch you. Apple followed this strategy. They focused on a few things and made class-leading products. Of course, android sells more than Iphone, but the value of an iphone is much much higher. Google is now doing the same.

it doesn't matter if they have 1 product in their portfolio or 10, as long as they are doing it right, i am happy with it.

It shouldnt matter if its a scooter, bike or an electric motorcycle as long as they're categorized as motor driven "two wheelers" in the end.
Widening ur product portfolio is actually a good thing especially if you have a long term fan base for those products(Read Activa). Majority of the two wheeler riders in this country opt for a scooter as a secondary vehicle for local errands.

Offtopic: Agree with your message but very bad example. Beg to differ on the bold part. iOS was so horrible I sold off my 2nd Gen iPad. Android feels miles ahead.

Ontopic: Sales in general matter very less compared to profits the company makes. Ducati sells lesser bikes than HMC. Does that make HMC better than Ducati in anyway ? Hence I still feel Bajaj is ahead of other companies mainly because they can profit significantly from their products and all of them offer best in-class value.

A very good point, in fact Bajaj's profits are significantly higher when compared to Hero Moto corp i.e. inspite of selling almost double that of Bajaj, Hero Moto corp makes about half of what Bajaj does. The way Bajaj is progressing with their bikes, I really doubt if competition can snatch any market share from Bajaj in 125cc+ segment.

Not practically. Bajaj are too busy and have too much on their plate already. Kawasaki is there on one side, and KTM on the other.

They have to get Discover ST's service training done, then upgrade the other Discovers too, and by next year, they have to produce KTM Duke 375/ 390 cc... and then its Pulsar variant. And Ninja 650R launch has to be done too sometime this year itself.

And we realize that Bajaj has a lot to do in motorcycle area itself. Plus, their present 3 wheelers adding to the burden.

When Rajiv Bajaj said that he would "focus" on being the best motorcycle manufacturer, he was suggesting that its better to do one thing at a time, but do it well! And I totally agree.

+1, well summed up Mr. mod. Bajaj are relatively new so it would be much better to become Master of one trade than becoming Jack of all trades. After they settle down comfortably in one trade, definitely business requirements would pursue them for another trade. And 2 very good launches by Bajaj auto are not complete so in August-September and later I see very positive sales for Bajaj only if the 2-wheeler industry doesnt go towards a big slowdown.

Motorcycle and scooters go so hand in hand that no 2wheeler company can deny scooter segment.
Bajaj also tried long to sustain in gear less scooter market, but failed after many attempts.
Not only focus, investors is the major factor which runs a company. So in business interest, scooter segment was stopped while 3 wheeler segment was retained.
And look it did wonders, now Bajaj:
                              1. is among world's most profitable automotive company
                              2. is leading premium bike company in India
                              3. has most prominent presence in abroad market
                              4. has the most profit (much higher than hero and honda)

so Bajaj excelled in all the fronts required for future growth.

Bajaj will reenter scooter segment, not now but in some time, Once they establish themselves as a prominent motorcycle manufacturer on international level.

                              All the best Bajaj...
