WK 650i: the first big bike from China

The Chinese motorcycle industry has been churning out big, big numbers for a long time – over 50% of the world’s motorcycles are built there after all.

Until now, however, they’ve often been small capacity copies; scooters and learner bikes built for commuters yet dismissed by true enthusiasts as cheap and poor quality.

But one ‘large number’ has eluded them – until now: big cc machines.

This new WK 650i changes all that – and potentially has huge ramifications for the future of motorcycling – particularly as it’s not a one-off: more, larger and better machines are certainly on the way.

Let’s be straight from the outset: the WK 650i is a big, big step forward from the average Chinese lightweight available until now.

The 650i is pretty good looking with most of the right bits in the right places: stainless exhaust, wavy discs, modern switchgear, part-LCD clocks and more.

The trouble is, that’s about as good as it gets. The 650i looks the part, but it isn’t really quite good enough and there’s never any getting away from the feeling that you’re riding a cheaper, tackier, flimsier copy of something else.

I’ll tell you why: the switchgear, though modern looking, doesn’t operate as crisply as you expect – especially the indicators. That ‘stainless pipe’ includes a crude, fake cover, to mimic the stubby shape of the ER-6n’s version. The horn is just tacked on to the frame downtubes.

On the move, it seems eager enough, with plenty of usable midrange, but both the bike and I seem reluctant to rev all the way out. WK claim 71bhp, ie the same as the ER-6n on which it’s based, but I have my doubts.

Part of that doubt is due to my skepticism over the WK’s speedo readings. In short, when the digital speedo was reading 50, 60mph or whatever, it simply didn’t FEEL like it. So we checked it against another bike and a GPS. The WK was over-reading by 8-10mph both at 50 and 70mph. Hmmmm.

The chassis experience is similar. Yes it’s taut enough, steers OK and the brakes are adequate, but none of it is exactly inspiring. The brakes are a little dull, the cheap tyres crude, the suspension on bumpy back roads downright choppy. Maybe little of that matters to first time big bike buyers, but there’s none of the class of the ER-6.

Read the full test in the current issue of MCN.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Guys, will someone dare to get this bike if it (being a chinese) comes dirt cheap? How about the same thing for 1.5 Lacs? Will anyone dare to get it just for high performance?

Personally speaking, I think I might take a risk for dirt cheap performance, if and only if a dedicated service centre opens up in my city and gets lots of spares.

So, accd. to the speedo readings, at actual 80 kmph, 96 kmph is displayed?! That's a large error margin.

I would wait for one to arrive in india and then judge it... this looks pretty solid to me in the pics, not expecting it to match kawasaki if its half the price, if the spares are also cheap and easily available, i'll live with this.

moreover, the things that have been mentioned to highlight the poor quality such as a crude exhaust cover, flimsy switch panel, tacky plastic finish and bla blah.. thats there on most of the bikes that i see around.

you wont get any service for Chinese, whether its mobile or bike or watever it is may be 2 out of 5 will last a worthwhile. Even at 1.5 i'll go for a cbr anyday than this junk
If China provides any dedicated service, that company'll get closed pretty quickly

i don't think it will ever come to india.
even it is launched in india, it will not be dirt cheap like ....1.5 lakhs or so.

I guess people have no idea about what happened the last time chinese bikes were sold in India. the whole lot started malfunctioning and the co owner who did the import etc declared bankruptcy.

i have used chinese scooters for almost 4 years when living in hongkong.. they are wonderful, the acceleration was mindblowing and FE was good too,the best part was the whole bike was custom made,u can decide trhe graphics the exhausts ,everything all that under 20k inr..
it had atop speed around 140kmpl... i never had much of maintainance too,so i guess we shoudl stop labelling it as cheap chinese and look it as a performance wise,as china before isnt china now !! i will try and post some pics of my scooty soon

140 kmpl top speed. Err... ok.

Jokes apart, Dude, we really need some pics to believe all this. And which Chinese company are you referring to? Or are you referring to some custom bike maker?

He's probably talking about VIBGYOR Rock 100, Shark 150, etc. Sourav Ganguly endorsed it but later backed down as he was sued too, and customers started burning their bikes in front of the Showrooms. It was a sad end.

But, Ahaa... Shark 150... I remember... PEAK POWER AT 9500 rpm!!! (just to produce a measly 11.xx bhp, this comes from a 150cc engine.)
