  • Adventure overtakes Sportsbikes in the UK

ADVENTURE motorcycles have outsold Sportsbikes in the UK so far this year.

The Adventure Sport category is up 30% this year with 8,990 units sold, compared to 6,916 during the same period in 2011. The Supersport category has sold 8,548 units so far this year, a 4.1% decrease on 2011.

1,103 motorcycles were sold in the Adventure Sport category in July this year, a 13.9% rise on the same month last year. The most popular motorcycle in the Adventure Sport category in July was the Triumph Tiger Explorer 1215, selling 89 units.

Although the Supersport category sold 1,270 units last month, up 13.5% on the same period in 2011, the figures are not quite what they seem. The Supersport category includes all sportsbikes but the figures are skewed as 125cc motorcycles like the Yamaha YZF-R125 - which was the number-one seller in July, selling 186 units out of the 1,270 - are also included in this category. 125cc 'sportsbikes' make up a large proportion of sales in the Supersport category.

If the trend continues for the rest of 2011, Adventure Sport motorcyles will easily outsell Supersport machines. Is this a sign that 30 years of sportsbike worship are coming to an end and that we, like our European cousins, favour Adventure and Naked bikes over Sportsbikes?

so, the trend is changing, but what is more surprising to me is the total numbers sold. isn't these too low..?

i always thought that developed & rich western countries have lot of sportsbikes and supersport bikes or simply big bikes, but these figures are quite low.

I was reading somewhere on some international bike forum, that the reason for this trend is the improvement in handling characteristics of Adventure motorcycles in the recent past. Most road users will find it sufficient to quench their thirst for cornering.

Second being the ever decreasing speed limits. The complaint is that you hit the speed limit in first gear on supersports
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

exactly! the reason for the decline in the sales of supersports bike IMO is the strict speed limits.

The weather might also play a role here; a lot of time its either raining there or snowing, so.

I think there should also be some choice of gearboxes for the supersport models so that instead of 300+km/hr top speed, the bike will hit redline at 200km/hr or lower in topgear. The result will be a bike with phenomenal acceleration and drivability similar to a 250cc bike. What i mean is imagine shifting gears in supersport bikes like we used to in our lower cc bikes but with much greater acceleration and top speed. That sounds good to me!.

People in countries like the US/UK commute in Cars/SUVS.. motorycles are bought only by serious enthusiasts. It's not surprising to find most of them might have never ridden a motorcycle in their life. We Indians think that by riding a R15, CBR250R to work, college, grocery store, we are Sport Biking.. but in reality its is just glorified commuting (which most still find it hard to accept).

Coming back to the topic: With Super Sports, One can have fun only on smooth surfaces and with strict speed limits in developed countries, exploiting the full potential of Super Sports is mostly restricted to closed circuit race tracks. Adventure bikes (big daddy of dual sport bikes) has the promise of fun both on and off the road. It's like having a big SUV even if one might not venture off the road that often.

I can understand the trend for Adventure over Super Sports.. even to me the idea of riding a "desi" Adventure bike is appealing more than a "desi" Super Sports. No not the Impluse but definitely a scaled down version of the BMW R1200GS or Triumph Tiger. I guess as one grows older one realizes that riding a motorcycle is not only about speed.. and mind you the average age of motorcyclists in advanced countries is growing older.

thats a bitter truth, but maybe different countries, different ppl, different economic zones, different cultures have different definitions of sports biking, just like different cultures have different eating habits etc.

we are happy with what we are doing, coz thats what we can afford right now...hihi he he...

you are correct as one grows older one realizes that quest for speed is not the only way of biking and one goes touring on adventure bikes, but this comes only after his quest for speed is satisfied, otherwise even on adventure touring bikes he goes cornering and knee dragging....

So it seems the world is growing old. And also will be the bike types. For 30 years UK had sportsbike riders dominating the market. Wow!

The first proper sportsbike[for us],YZF R15 came to India in 2007.

I wonder if that will happen in India? Since we have the world's youngest working population now. In 2015 India will surpass China with the world's youngest population.

It will be interesting to see how the market changes. What the young generation of future will ride? Not just in UK but all over the world.

Amen. any of these scaled down versions would be great. I want to go to leh, but not skidding and sliding on slush. rather in control and with reliability.
