    HMSI Manesar plant under trouble.

As Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) struggles to normalise operations at the Manesar plant, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is facing a tough time with its labour union, which has put forward a long list of demands warning that workers could declare strike if their demands are not met.

According to the sources, the union has demanded for doubling basic salary of contract workers and absorbing them as permanent employees.

" The contract workers are getting 35 per cent less salary than the regular workers and do not get any other benefits. We have been demanding for an increase in the number of permanent workers and providing them better amenities," a union member with HMSI said.

There are total 6,000 workers at HMSI, out of which only 1,800 are permanent.

Apart from these demands, the workers want an increase in housing allowance or provision for houses.

According to the union, the demands are reasonable given the good revenues of the company.

" The company is ready to sack a contract worker whenever there is a slowdown. However, they are not ready to share their profit. What we are asking for is reasonable given the current rate of inflation and the company's rising sales," a union member said.

The union was already supporting their fellow workers at the Manesar plant and extended their backing when they went on strike.

" Those who are saying we are troublemakers must come and see our living conditions. We do not have proper houses that lack sanitation. In fact, this is the common complaint in the whole belt, including that of the Manesar labour union," the HMSI union added.

When contacted, the company management said that they have received the list of demands from the workers and they are already being reviewed.

However, they did not share any details about the demands.

Trouble has been brewing between the union and the company for quite some time.

Last month, one worker was suspended due to his alleged misbehavior with one of the supervisors but the suspension was revoked after the intervention of the union.

Even the labour union at the Manesar plant had demanded permanency for contract workers.

MARUTI - faced almost the same problem in the past: According to the MSIL union, the tension increased between the management and the union only after the demand of regularising contract workers was not met.

It was this tension, which turned violent on July 18, resulting in death of one of the human resources manager, which forced the company to declare lockout at the plant for 33 days.

Therefore, MSIL announced to do away with the contract workers at its Manesar plant.

MSIL chairman R. C. Bhargava had said the company would directly recruit workers and they would be paid wages and other benefits similar to those on the permanent rolls of the company. The process of regularisation will be completed by the first week of September.

After the Recent Maruti Fiasco as the spotted track record of the problems that Suzuki, Honda have been facing with the labor unions.. I see the Japs slowly pulling out of Gurgaon and the troublesome areas.

Time for Mr. Modi to make a few more Japan visits.

It seems to me It's quite hard to run & manage such big bussiness with so much of workers demanding to double their salery directly!!!

somehow workers are understanding that Honda is earning huge profits on it's bikes!!

Can't say entire North of India because, I believe NaMo filters out the best & only the rest comes to South

From a different perspective, Union, strikes & threats aren't new to this country & especially when the whole lot of them are corrupt and anything + everything can be bought with money & power, just a few calls or visit to silent, silent partner will straighten out things

                Mr. Narendra Modi

BTW, it's not just Honda, I guess every company has it's own share. I felt Honda was far better, or may be the insights are yet to surface...
