Bajaj homologates KTM Duke 200 for Racing use in India.

Bajaj Auto has homologated the KTM 200 Duke with FMSCI (Federation of Motorsport Clubs of India). In effect this means that you can now officially use the Duke 200 for racing or rallying. The homologation comes in just before the Raid De Himalaya, one of the toughest rallies in the world, where we believe the bike should perform well. The Duke had already made its debut in the Mughal Road Rally this June – it secured a win on debut there – and the official homologation should see the motorcycle gain immense popularity in the motorsport fraternity. The Duke 200 has impressed enthusiasts with its dynamics, and has proved to be one of the most exciting launches of 2012. Given that Austrian manufacturer KTM boasts of a phenomenal heritage in motorsport, more so in motocross, it was a natural choice for Bajaj Auto to decide to homologate the motorcycle.

This should help open new avenues for motorsport enthusiasts and help Bajaj in strengthening the orange brand. We aren’t sure yet if Bajaj will follow in Honda and Yamaha’s footsteps and have its one-make racing series. Given the streetbike stance of the Duke 200 that would not make much sense according to us, but yes we would certainly like to see Bajaj do something like the famous Japanese ‘gymkhanas’. These are essentially small, super-tight circuits and are a purer test of man and machine both as compared to regular race tracks. And we believe the ‘Orange Day’ that Bajaj has initiated, is a step in the same direction. The orange day sees Duke 200 owners test their skills around tight circuits made in parking lots and the like, and more of these should help set the base and allow Bajaj to foray into motorsport, an arena the manufacturer is yet to mark its presence in.

Bajaj never homologated the older generation Pulsars (upto P180 UG4) for racing, maybe because they weren't meant to be used that way. But times change, and with that opinions change too.
I used to say that if Duke/Pulsar 200 engine & components aren't used for Racing, its a "sore under-utilisation" of the platform. It seems people at Bajaj do agree with me & I won't have to say it anymore. In the stock category atleast, I think Duke can definitely dominate. Its a fantastic all rounder, with very strong basics. Braking, power, handling, ergonomics, etc. all are acceptable for racing, if not the best. A racetrack test by some journalists has seen the Duke 200 stand on the top, defeating home-built competition like the CBR 250R, R15, etc.

I believe Honda and Yamaha can later on introduce motorcycles which can beat the Duke on the racetrack easily. Only that, Honda has to forget commuterism and Yamaha has to forget cc limits. Simple.

Thats great news. How this true street bike will deal some quarter ltr bikes (Ninja 250 and gt 250) on track. It may beat one of them and will fall behind the other I guess.

      A brilliant move by Bajaj/KTM.

This bike can easily take the torture of rallies like Raid-de-Himalaya, I personally witnessed it a few days back during my spiti tour on the KTM, albeit with CEAT Vertigo tyre in the rear.

Didn't you feel that the KTM is too hard sprung for the off road stuff? Especially compared to a P220?
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
