  • Harley-Davidson to launch a made-for-India machine in 2014 :D

The American motorcycle giant will set up a unit in India to manufacture entry level bikes to take on Japanese and European rivals

Last month we brought you the details on the upcoming KTMHarley-DavidsonHarley-DavidsonHarley-Davidson officials from US and India have been visiting Indian vendors with the aim to set up a manufacturing unit and a vendor base for a new line-up of Harley motorcycles that will be unveiled at the 2014 Auto Expo in New Delhi. Developing a new cost-effective motorcycle for the Indian market is bound to take that much time. The new Harley-Davidson motorcycle will be a V-twin in the 400cc to 500cc bracket.

Built exclusively for the Indian market, it will be fully localised and will carry a price tag of Rs 3.5 lakh to take on entry level premium machines like the Kawasaki Ninja 250R, Hyosung GT250R and the soon-to-be launched KTM 390 Duke. And with Honda also planning to bring its newly launched CBR500 family to India next year, it is necessary for the US giant to have affordable machines in its Indian product portfolio to get a foothold in the burgeoning entry level premium motorcycle segment.

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

Harley seems to be very serious about the Indian market. This is a very good initiative. but first they must setup some more service centres around the country

BIG hug to the HD Team. Just thinking of the situation that one can own a Harley for sub 5 Lakhs is enough of a kick. Tourers who need an urgent upgrade but waiting for something VFM bike will rejoice. Good news there.

That's a really nice news. HD's management is very much biker oriented. I still remember their advertisement saying "No one can TAX our freedom. Screw it. Let's ride". They're similar to Honda and Bajaj in this way: They actually are trying to get more & more people on better motorcycles.

Other companies can definitely learn a lot from these three companies.

Built exclusively for the Indian market, it will be fully localised and will carry a price tag of Rs 3.5 lakh to take on entry level premium machines like the Kawasaki Ninja 250R, Hyosung GT250R and the soon-to-be launched KTM 390 Duke.
              Cruisers are a different breed.
You're either choosing among the sports/ street/ off road bike and will not even consider taking a cruiser in any case,
OR you're taking a Cruiser only, & screw everyone else's advise while doing so.

Either ways, I don't think that even the most amateurish bike rider will ever mistake Harley for a sportsbike, and make the wrong choice. Hence, generally I don't see these bikes burning into each other's share.

And anyways, its far off as of now. Even 2013 hasn't started as yet. And we're yet to see the 21 Dec 2012 predictions.
