    Doing a wheelie in Public will land you in jail in Illinois, USA

    A new law has been passed in Illinois which specifically bans wheelies. This law came into effect on the 1st of January 2013.

    The law defines a wheelie as operating a motorcycle on one wheel! Other than that riding without holding the handle bars is also an offence. The fine on the first offence is 100$, second offence is 1500$ and 6 months in jail. The third will land you in jail for a year with a 2500$ fine.

    All those inexperienced bikers who get onto a powerful bike for the first time might find it very costly to inadvertently pop a wheelie! Illinois is a state where the majority of riders are Harley owners who have a very strong organisation. This law most probably will target only motorcyclists who ride anything other than a cruiser!

    The point that makes this law extremely surprising is that in the state of Illinois, helmets are not compulsory.

    Advice is a form of nostalgia.
    Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

      What a funny definition. It means that:

      1. Even a Stoppie will land you in jail, because wheelie is defined as "operating a motorcycle on one wheel!". Which means a wheelie = a stoppie.

      2. You're legally safe while doing Wheelies & Stoppies on ATV's (2 wheels will still stay on ground) and Stoppies on the Piaggio MP3.


      Ok, jokes apart, I think the occasional unintentional wheelie should be forgiven. Wheelie is a factor of "change in torque : time". With today's superbikes' peaky & spikey power curves, wheelies do happen, and not always intentionally. Suppose, a car or a flying bird startles or distracts you, and you pull the throttle a bit, but suddenly... (then?)

      The intentional ones should be identified and the wrongdoers punished.

        weird logic and weird law, clearly the safety is not on the mind of lawmakers otherwise helmets should be made compulsory first...

          "Pull a wheelie once, while exceeding the speed limit"
          So as long as you are in in the speed limit, it is not an issue, that takes cares of the unintentional wheelies and stoppie inside speed limits.
          In US with the kind of speed limits it doesn't really help if you have a helmet and you squid around, the effectiveness is questionable. Again there is the full face vs half helmets which is to get around the law, weirdly the half ones are dot approved, I am talking about the ones that are favourite among Harley riders.
          The law is probably more towards dealing with show-off's in highway's. I think jail time is a little too harsh though.
