    KTM outsells BMW in global sales!

    KTM sold more than BMW in 2012 for the very first time.



    The iconic Austrian brand which till recently was a small company selling mostly off-roading motorcycles has now grown both off and on-road. This was completely unexpected as BMW had a record sale in 2012. The fact that KTM has overtaken BMW can be attributed in a great deal to Bajaj Auto.

    KTM sold 107142 units worldwide, which was about one thousand more than BMW. The majority of its 32% growth sales has been from USA and India. In USA, KTM grew by 15%, but these sales were mostly restricted to its off-road motorcycles. But the growth in Europe was phenomenal at 9%, considering that the European market contracted by 12%.

    The KTM 125 and the KTM 200 have contributed in a big way to its road motorcycles. The company sold around 8000 KTM 200s in India in 2012. The relationship between Bajaj and KTM has been going from strength to strength. With the soon expected launch of the KTM 390, one can only see KTM going up, up and away!

        and where are these 8000 dukes in india? i know bangalore has a lot of them. hyderabad verrrry few!

          Well, it's hardly surprising. They are selling smaller, cheaper bikes, so they'll obviously sell more.
          Bajaj Pulsar 150 : 2004-2005
          Honda Dio : 2005-2012
          KTM 200 Duke : 2012-
          Aprilia RSV4 APRC ABS : 2014-

            I'm afraid that is true. Add to it the big population of most developing countries, and you have a large customer base for cheaper bikes. KTM's major future is in developing countries only, I believe.

            And, KTM Duke 200's sales number (8000) is really an amazing news. For contrast, if I remember correctly, 3 years ago YZF R15 used to sell around 1500 units/ month.

                Of course, times have changed.
                Isn't that the big deal. Until now, KTM was a small premium brand, mostly concentrated on off-roading bikes. Now they are focusing on road bikes as well.

                The tie up with Bajaj has helped them get into the smaller capacity segment. Something that is absolutely necessary to make a mark in developing markets.

                BMW might do the same with the apparent tie up with TVS. Everybody has to sell in the developing markets to stay relevant in the next 10 odd years.
                Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!
