  • Hero Moto Corp now selling in Latin America, targeting Africa

Hero Moto Corp ships its first lot of motorcycles to Latin America.

HMC intends to increase its exports to 10% of its total sales. This was one of the key reasons that Hero parted with Honda, to be able to pursue its interests in the International market. The company hopes to sell in around 30 countries around the globe.

It is expected that the company will launch Hero as a brand in the South American and African markets in the next few weeks. In the future HMC will also set up assembly units in these markets once relevant volumes are achieved.

Hero hopes to offset its reduced market share in India by concentrating on exports. Will this strategy work is difficult to say. Because Hero is still using Honda technology and will continue to do so till 2014. What USP does Hero have while selling in foreign markets where they do not have brand loyalty like in India. These markets are already flooded with Chinese manufacturers who target the lowest end of the market. Will Hero be able to take on the Chinese at providing motorcycles at extremely low rates?

They must have some serious b@lls to sell rebranded Honda bikes in a country like Brazil, where some of the most innovative bikes from Honda currently sell. Except maybe Karizma ZMR, I don't think HMC has any other original+radical designs (and even that bike borrows the CRF230L engine).

South America doesn't mean Brazil infact Brazil will be the last country for any manufacturer as the rule says that one needs to have their own manufacturing plant for selling bikes in Brazil. Kawasaki also entered Brazil just 3-4years back

That's good, but if i'm right, Honda is present in all the latin american countries. How is Hero expecting to sell rebranded Honda bikes over there?

I don't think they are exporting to Brazil anytime soon, even Bajaj doesn't do that now after exporting bikes to Africa & Latin America for many years. They have just started with Duke 200 and may be some time in future, with the right Pulsar, they would enter Brazil.

"We are planning to launch our products in 8-10 new markets in Latin America and Africa by March. This is as per our plans to export one million units across the world by 2016-17,"

Hero MotoCorp (HMC) Senior Vice President (Marketing and Sales) Anil Dua

According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) data, HMC's exports declined by 18.27 per cent at 1,21,859 units during April-December period this fiscal.

That's good then lol. But Isn't Brazil an export hub for vehicles in south america ? That's what I remember reading. If HMC doesn't have to compete IN Brazil, it has to compete with Brazilian made Honda bikes which are REALLY good.
