  • Mahindra hopes to breakeven by 2014-15

Dharmendra Mishra, Mahindra & Mahindra VP (sales, two wheelers) -

"We hope for break even in 2014-15,"

Mahindra 2 Wheelers has already pumped in Rs 100 crore in the motorcycle segment and plans an investment of another 400 crore in the next four to five years. The company expects its motorcycle sales to soon surpass its scooter sales.

The company's projected sales for 2012-13 was 1.2 Lakh units of Scooters. But the motorcycle segment they expect will see double digit growth. Four new models are expected to be launched in the coming financial year. A 150cc and 300cc motorcycle is expected to be launched soon.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I don't see much happening... Mahindra badly needs someone at the top who understands 2 wheelers.

Rightly said Mahindra Two wheeler's badly need a person at top who understands that the two wheeler market is far different from the SUV market and strategies required for success will be far different. Adding to the woes will be the fierce and highly capable competition available in the market. By keeping stupid names just because they end with "O" will not replicate success in two wheeler market like it did for their SUV market.

Although I agree that they make good SUV's and that has brought success to them in the SUV market but one can not forget the fact that TATA gave Mahindra the SUV market very easily. Mahindra's SUV success is also largely to the fact that TATA the only SUV competitor in the market did nothing to defend them and were not able to bring out capable and attaractive vehicles.

Whereas in the Two wheeler market there are more capable, more reliable and more good looking vehicles available already then why would one go for Mahindra Two wheelers? Mahindra needs to be above the competition and they should apply their strategy of being 10% better in all parameters here also.

I foresee two problems here with their recently launched vehicles:
          1) Aesthetically they are not pleasing.
          2) Their name is already spoilt because of the last vehicle problems so they need to build up their name on reliability.
          3) They should have some USP like the longest comfortable seat, the largest wheel base for stability, wider tyres for better grip, solution to carry heavy luggage etc etc.

The way I see it, its not looking like they are going to break even. They have to come up with something more. They require more dedication in their 2 wheeler segment because its not like the SUV market like amit mentioned above. They should prepare themselves for the heavy competition from the likes of Bajaj,Honda,Yamaha,Hero,KTM. This won't be a piece of cake like their SUV market which barely has any competition. They should understand that. If they think that people who bought their SUVs from Mahindra will blindly go pick their bikes for their brand name, they're gravely mistaken. People are quite smart these days, with varied options and info available.

Mahindra can design products for segments with little or no competition like the geared scooter and Moped segment. But given the kind of approach they have, I wont be surprised if the products in that category bomb too. I hope Mahindra realizes the gravity of the situation soon.

The commuter market is flooded with too many choices. It's really doubtful if adding a drop to a pool would make a difference.

Mahindra has already made a presence in the SUV market - it would make sense if they shift their focus from the commuter segment bikes to crosstouring and motard-esque bikes which will provide excellent touring comfort on poor roads. The Indian market is seriously lacking that segment and if Mahindra get the equation right, they can emerge as winners. Right now, their only competition is the Impulse. If they design a 150-200cc crosstourer on the lines of the CB500X, that would be a runaway hit!

That way, they can also build a brand reputation. Today, the brand "Mahindra" conjures up an image of beefy, muscular SUVs like the Scorpio and XUV.
Tomorrow, the word "Mahindra2Wheelers" should bring to mind something unique (such as crosstouring bikes)
