Figures released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), HMSI sold 2608841 units between 1st April 2012 to 31st March 2013. While BAL sold 2463863 units in the same period. A difference of around 1.5 lakh units, giving Honda a clear lead over Bajaj. In the previous year, Bajaj was comfortably ahead of Honda. A lead of around 6 lakhs. While Bajaj sales dropped marginally, Honda sales increased exponentially.
Hero MotoCorp on the other hand continues to dominate the market with 5912538 units in FY 2012-13.
Honda's sales have been boosted by a 50% increase in their motorcycle sales and an extremely aggressive product strategy. On the exports front, Bajaj is far ahead of any other Indian manufacturer. Honda expects to further increase their sales by 42.7% to 39.3 lakhs in the next Financial year.
How Bajaj will respond to this aggressive Honda will be seen in the coming quarters.
