Currently the company has two production units, in Manesar in Haryana and Tapukara in Rajasthan, with a total capacity of 28 lakh units annually. The company is setting up its third facility in Karnataka at a cost of Rs 1500crore, with an expected capacity of 12 lakhs. The plant is set to be operational by May 2013, and capacity will be expanded in the other two plants as well.
This is part of Honda's aggressive strategy to overtake Hero for the No. 1 position by 2017. This could mean that by 2020, the company may have 8 plants in India! By increasing localisation and increasing volumes, HMSI hopes to also bring down pricing to more competitive levels.
