  • Superbikes too noisy for Mumbai cops!

This just came up on the Mirror front page, what appears to be a ridiculous bit of news, which is fining bikes just because they make 'too much' noise above so called 'permissible levels!!' ( I guess our cops havent got paid well recently, hence this way of getting clever bribes directly!)

Its being done for a good reason. And I appreciate the gesture.

Though I am not clear on what are they going to do with those noisey Royal Enfields they still run which goes Rub-a-dub-dub. So decided to make a list of them and share it with the cops for a decible check too.

Agreed to what Satyen says, but at the same time, I wonder how these cops consider the four wheels with modified exhaust or the exotic Lambos et al all music to their trembling ear drums?? Are the bikes louder than those ??

gud about time they took action on morons who r just posers.... in my area itself stupid kids (n responsible guys too with long hair n stuff.... u get the picture right) who think that they own a superbike, but in reality they ride an old modified rx100 or shogun without a silencer, which can even put an helicopter to shame.... i m serious u can hear them from a km before they approach n a km after they leave..... speed is around usually 50-60kmph.... but the bike exhaust sounds as if a space shuttle is taking off with afterburners et all.... n mind u they even put the motogp riders to shame the way they corner in traffic on that shitty knobby tires from an era which i dont even know.... plus when they have to brake (god only help who comes in front of them) they will wriggle the throttle as if they r trying to stop an airbus A380 on a short runway.... seriously....

seriously -- they are the most irritants as the ratio is almost 500 to one superbike but since the thullas too use them frequently these are not even glanced at or stopped for normal checks

              Few points.

              1. The cops cannot demand a ride on your bike, even as pillion. I think even in this corrupt police state we live in personal property laws do apply and as the owner you can decide who gets to ride on it.

              2. They cannot even demand you ride or even start the bike once it's parked or turned off. Reason? My bike. Suddenly i just don't feel like riding it, i think i'll just wheel it to the nearest legal parking zone and take a cab home.

              3. What about all the festivals which are such a major part of our great indian 'culture'? They're all about noise. Bikes won't be making a fraction of the ruckus we hear ever so often, sometimes even after the deadline hours at night.

There is no good reason. Bikes have always been a soft target and will always remain so as long as no one objects to this BS in the name of law. Look at vehicles being pulled over and fined for traffic violations and see the ratio of bikes to cars being challaned.

I appreciate the gesture, disturbing citizens at unearthly hours for no reason isnt fair and they deserve the fine in that case. But I dont seem it fair enough. Given a scenario where after a tiring week, you decide to take a long ride on ride on your bike in the city post midnight and the cops catch you, what then?

If noise decibels were a problem, all the companies would slap us a notice saying hey your bike exceeds the noise levels you better watch out for the cops...it would become a buy it at your own risk proposition! Why dont they fine modified cars instead?!

I second you Julianpaul. This is just a truck load of b*** crap!

i am not sure but i think that all the bikes and cars have to undergo homologation bfore they are allowed to sell their products in the indian market.... they can pass this if their vehicle adheres to the noise, pollution etc stds..... the problem lies with aftermarket fitments which creates a loud noise in exhaust on pretext of giving more power... or some people just want that grunt from their bikes so that everyone looks at them when they drive pass.....

These steps were taken because the many residents had made complaints about the noise of the bikes at 3am in the night. And the new's paper also stated they had races on marine drive. I think that many exhausts are available with DB killers. They should be used.
I would rather be riding my bike thinking of God, than sitting in the temple thinking of my bike.

                      Guys,
It is technically possible that these CBU machines don't match the Indian Sound regulations. Remember, their special CBU import rule, exempts them from homologation completely...?

My guess however, is that maybe the Harley guy was really free revving it hard (in neutral) in a colony, because if he was travelling, he would've passed through the place in seconds. But, the complaint suggests more disturbance than just "passing through".

IF this is true, then the policemen get another excuse. One guy revs hard in a colony, and now they'll disturb every such biker having an imported sportsbike, even stock bikes. But again, this is what I perceive from the article. Truth may be different.

What about the bullets with punjab silencers? They are a nuisance. I agree to the point where there are so many bikers with loud after market silencers just to seek attention and pose without proper riding gear etc. but what about the standard company fitted silencers on the super bikes?
They are ofcourse homologated, aren't they ?

In mumbai, I find the most noisy traffics are Three wheelers. Those small exhausts can seriously create a racket. Next will be RE. Not counting modded exhausts.

Normally I don't find high capacity motorcycles like SBKs noisy at all. Of course that changes when they rev it up, BUT not while riding normally.

I was riding in my neighborhood in a slow narrow lane. In front of me was a Busa. It was humming beautifully until the rider rev it. The point here is..the rider has no reason to rev the bike. He does that about every five seconds to..guess what? get attention. A poser on a Busa . He was going like...vvvvvvvvVOOMvvvvvvvvvvVOOMvvvvvvvvvVOOM.

Other time I see these posers passing in totally unnecessary low gears just for the noise effect. If these people learn how to ride normally, bikers in general wouldn't be in trouble.

But authorities need to do something about those three wheelers first.

Absolutely right, most of the times you hear an SBK go by it's already long gone, and the sound isn't half as loud as say the CONTINUOUS honking in bhendi bazaar. Seriously someone should send these cops to mohammedali road at 6pm and pull out their decibel meters.

And if we were to say that it's the few bad apples, i.e. the revvers who have brought this on us, then what about the cars etc.? This is clearly another cops-picking-on-bikers story, nothing else.
